Does anybody drive a Yaris?

Hi there - I'm just looking for general info. I'm very close to starting a car search. My truck is wearing out, the poor thing.

So, does anybody have any comments about the Toyota Yaris? It seems to get pretty good highway mileage at 35 mpg. The price is good. I've never owned a Toyota before - what're they like?

I'd considered the Prius, but they're on backorder all over the place. There are some other things that I won't get into here, since this thread is about the Yaris! But if anybody wants to comment on the Prius as well, feel free!

Can't comment on the Yaris specifically, but Toyota in general makes very reliable cars that hold their resale value for a long time.

I've had a Corolla for a year and love it! I get 37-40 MPG (I do mostly highway type driving), rides nicely, and is even pretty good in the snow.

My husband is on his second Toyota Tacoma - he only sold the first one because someone made an offer on it that he couldn't turn down.

Hope this helps a little.

Hey Shannon,

My DH has had his Prius for just over two years, and he loves it! Gas here is up to about $4.70, so it literally almost pays for itself.

Before buying the Prius, we had talked to a couple from my work who have each had the older Prius and the newer one. They love them and had nothing but good things to say about them!

HTH! :) Let me know if you want me to ask DH more specific questions for you.

Gayle, you get 37-40 mpg in a Corolla? Wow. It's not a hybrid or anything special? That's amazing!!!

I do mostly highway driving too - about 100 miles a day.

I just bought a Yaris in September. Before that, I had a Tercel for 14 years and before that another Tercel for 5 (I crashed it). I would never drive anything else, you can run those things into the ground as long as you keep up with the required maintenance. I have the 2 door hatchback, it's a little small so if you have kids or tend to transport a lot from one point to another you might want to consider the 4 door version.

ETA: I wanted to say that when I crashed my first Tercel (head first into a guard rail at 70mph and this was before airbags) the paramedics told me that the Tercel saved my life because the entire front end was smashed in like an accordian. He said they are designed to take the impact in exactly this type of a crash.

The Yaris is the much better option for highway miles and if I recall, much cheaper than the Prius

I just bought a new car a week ago today. Yay me!! I was looking at the Yaris but I found a better deal with the Nissan Sentra--cheaper, just as reliable, and it gets 33 MPG highway. I'm very pleased. I really wanted a Yaris but they were a little over my price range. Toyota's are excellent cars but after researching it for a while, I decided to get a Nissan which is basically one step down price-wise but just as reliable.

Have fun with your car search! I had a great time with mine but I'm glad it's over and done with. I love my fancy new car!!!

ETA: I would love a Prius but the dealers can't keep them in stock in my area. They're FLYING off the lots. They're way to expensive for me though at around $33,000....

I got a Yaris in March and I LOVE it. In addition to getting great gas mileage it handles like a charm. I drive a lot. I already have over 6,000 miles on it. I don't really like to drive, just have to, but I'm enjoying it a little more since I finally got a car that I actually like. Mine is also a two door hatchback. I get lots of people asking me how I like it. I'm not sure if the four door gets as good gas mileage and it's definitely not as cute. The interior is also well designed with lots of compartments and cup holders to stash you stuff.

I drive a Toyota (Highlander) and LOVE it! My DH is a Toyota mechanic. They are great cars, you can't go wrong!

Another vote for the Corolla...I also get close to 40 mpg highway!!! Cheaper than a Honda Civic and I believe gets better mileage. Love this car...and I understand it's similar in feel to the the Yaris, but I think people think the Corolla has less road noise.

Well, a girl driving a Yaris crossed a highway in front of me when I was going about 50, and both mine and her car were smashed to smitherings. I gotta say, the Yaris did its job(as did my car), and no one was injured badly.

Subsquently, I had to go car shopping, and needless to say, fuel economy was top on the list. I was told all Hybrid's were about a 6 month wait.I drove a lot of cars, including two Toyotas, the Corolla and the Matrix. Did not like the Matrix at all, the Corolla was not sporty enough although gas mileage was good.

I ended up with a Honda Civic 2 door couple, EX, and really like it. Rating is 25 in town, 36 highway, with an average of 28. I am averaging 31. Reliabilty is highly rated, so is safety, and Kelly Blue Book says they hold their value.

My sister has a Prius that she got 4 years ago after a 6 month wait, and loves it. It gets an average of 49 mpg. Toyota's are good cars, I at one time had a Sienna, and it was very, very reliable.

Check out Edmunds.com on Yaris's. I read some stuff there that concerned me. I looked into buying one about 6 months ago. I bought a Nissan Versa instead, and love it. I get betwee 30-32 mpg. 100,000 mile warrenty to boot. I have the standard 6 speed transmission in mine. The 6 speeds are harder to get, but save you about $3000. One with an automatic runs about $17000. My inlaws bought one too, they drive more conservatively than I do and are getting better gas mileage with theirs. Grandpa rarely goes over 60. I transverse some pretty serious hills between home and work eveyday which I think lowers my gas mileage. Mine gets better on long trips when driving at a steady speed. Wasn't crazy about the Yaris, but we also have had a bad experience with the Toyota dealership here. (I think our experience was atypical and due to the specific owner of the dealership near us.)

We bought a Yaris in January, my husband drives it to work (an hour commute to Columbus every day). In the winter it gets about 39 MPG. In the summer it’s about 43-45 MPG. It's little, not nearly as handy as our Trailblazer, but we bought it to save gas $ and it does help with that. We've had no problems with it so far anyway and we kinda like it!

My daughter bought a 4 door Yaris last year. It is sooooo roomy; you wouldn't believe it. I have a Corolla myself and she has more room than I do!

One of my coworkers, who has a very long commute every day, drives a Yaris and he really likes it. Anything made by Toyota would be an excellent choice in terms of quality and reliability. Same goes for Honda.

I have a 2004 Honda Civic that averages 37 mpg - it's just a regular Civic, not a hybrid. I absolutely love it! :)
