DODGY KNEES

This question is for anyone out there. I was wondering if doing dips is just as effective as doing lunges as I seem to have a problem with my knees, if not, any suggestions would be appreciated. I also have a problem with my back when doing dead lifts, I love doing them as they seem to be the most effective, but I just can't take the chance anymore. I've tried putting on ankle weights and doing various things, but it's not quite the same, any suggestions??
