Do you tip or not?

When you have you hair cut/styled/colored, do you tip your stylist if they own the salon. I used to go to the owner and I didn't tip her, figuring the fee is all hers. Now I go to one of the other stylists and I do tip her. Just wondering what you all do.

Hi Doreen,

I never tip the owner who does my hair but now she is going to a salon where she is not the owner so I guess I will have to start tipping her. She is renting booth space and I guess that is when you tip.

I tip everyone who touches my head, except my stylist, who owns the salon. I see others tipping him though, so sometimes I feel like I should be too.

Hi Doreen-

My hairdresser - is the owner and the only one in her shop - I always tip her. Mostly cause her prices are so reasonable compared to many other salons, I figure it is still cheaper than what I would pay else where. And she has to pay out alot in other fees, ie: taxes, rent, etc. And she does a great job.

I tip more if the stylist is an employee of the salon as opposed to being a booth renter (independent contractor) or salon owner. However, when it costs between $75 to $100 for appointments every five weeks I'm not terribly generous with my tipping and to be honest I don't think many stylists expect people too---they're just happy to still have customers even with gas climbing to $3.00 a gallon.

I just switched to a different salon because my stylist moved salons. A different person washes my hair now. Are you supposed to tip that person? I always tip my stylist.

You can NEVER overtip, or offend anyone with a tip.

I tip the shampoo girl a couple of dollars. I tip my hairstylist 20-25% (my tips are more than most probably spend on their hair in the first place! ) . . . I would do this even if she owned the salon because she is really a gem!:)

The owner does my hair and I do not tip him. It is expensive enough already!! If I had to tip him, I would have to go back to coloring my hair at home. My kids, however, see a different guy and I do tip him as well as tipping the girl that waxes my dd's eyebrows.

I am not so sure about the nail salon, though. I don't have my nails anymore, but I use to go to a strip mall place with a very nice husband and wife team. They had a couple of other employees for very busy times, but it was mostly just the two of them. I would tip the wife but not the husband.:p Probably doesn't make sense, but I figured he was the owner and I am not sure if she was legally on anything as owner. ;-) Marnie

Hi! I am a stylist that rents a chair. I do accept tips. Some people do not tip; and thats ok. (but a tip is always appreciated:) )Some owners accept tips, some don't. I feel that if the owner's prices are reasonable, its best to tip; however, if some owners charge astronomical prices, it isn't neccesary. Shampoo people should be tipped well if they do a nice job! Take care, Nancy~~~

I have a question... why do people say NOT to tip a hairdresser if they are the owner of the salon? I don't understand why that makes them different than anyone else who does your hair. You are tipping to show your appreciation of a job well done... does being the owner of the salon make that any different?

Thanks for any explanations... I really have never understood this. I always, always tip my stylist, owner or non owner.

Regardless of who does my hair I always tip. I don't tip someone if they just wash my hair though. Although I can't remember a time when that's happened--my stylist always washes my hair. I'm a notorious over-tipper. Especially cab drivers. I live in the city and take cabs pretty often and still tip WAY too much for a cab ride. But I don't think you can ever tip too much. It's such a kind gesture and if I'm really happy with someone for a service (hairdresser, manicurist, cab driver) it's a way for me to show them my gratitude.

Yes, I always tip everyone no matter what. It's a reap-what-you-sow issue with me. I waited tables for 12 years during college and graduate school and always appreciated the generosity of people. My last colorist charged $40 and was wonderful; my new colorist (I moved) charges $85 and is wonderful as well. Both own their salons. I tip them both heftily despite the fact that my income is not high. Just on a philosophical level, I take tipping (and giving donations) as an opportunity to cultivate a mentality of abundance because it's so damn easy to fall into the (miserly) mentality of scarcity. Our whole society is pressing on us constantly to think in terms of scarcity, fear, layoffs.

So, is that like cow tipping but with people?

Hmm,
This question can be tricky (if anyone even still cares now that im getting to it five days later lol).
I dont think that the owner should make any difference. Like stated before, tips are for appreciation of good work and not a glass ceiling on what you feel someone should be making.
Many salon owners pay themsleves a salary instead of taking home all their earnings. Most also put a lot of their earnings back into the salon. Like ive said before, most stylist dont make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year like people think they do, and not all salon owners are living like kings. (check out my posting on the Pantene discussion).
Not all non-owners at a salon are employees. Many that ARE only make 40-50% of their services (and just because you go in and pay $50 for a 30 minute haircut, don't think they they're doing one every half hour, Ive had days, before I built up clientelle, where I might only have one haircut all day, and it sucks to have a paycheck less than $100. I remember when I moved to a new town away from home and didnt know anyone, I worked 40-50 hours a week, lived in a studio apartment with nothing but a bed and a beach chair-- and had to borrow rent money a few times!).
Even independant stylists still have to pay their quarterlys and for their own products. The ones that make the real stash are the ones that have worked and practiced to educate themselves, sold themselves well and are truly trustworthy and reliable to do a good job that can't be done at home and come with many referrals! They have been doing hair for a while and have put tremendous money into being the best, so I generally like to feel that their hard work is worth the money they make. Many businesses and careers that put hard work and time into their jobs get promotions, paypoffs and bonuses, paid vacations and benefits (all VERY rare in this field), I dont think that hairstylists should be seen any different, just because we're dealing with "hair", that we don't have a right to make a good living. If you earn it. On the flip side some stylist have no business charging $100 for a haircut (ive fixed many of them lol).

Back to tipping, no one is ever offended with a tip. Some stylists get spoiled and might be offended when someone tips them less than what they get from thier other clients, but most of us ARE just happy to get loyal clients with the rise of gas prices and whatnot.
