Do you think too much coffee slows down weight loss??

Okay here's the story:eek: ...I recently put on a couple of pounds, not a lot but around 5 pounds. I have been the same weight forever maybe a 2 pound difference. I have been eating out quite a bit lately. I had been eating out all last month. I also drink between 3-4 cups of coffee a day. I still workout between 5-6 days a week regularly and have pretty consistent with that. I make sure I balance out cardio, weights and stretching. Anyway, I started back on track eating "clean" as of October 1st. I have not lost a single pound. I haven't eatin out, but I still drink all the coffee. This is nothing new though. I have always been a heavy coffee drinker. It has been a month already and nothing has budged!! I was told that too much coffee can affect weight loss. Can someone please clarify this?? I just can't understand it. I always thought that the caffeine actually aids in the breakdown of fat cells. Please correct me if I am wrong..I want this weight off!!

It's my understanding that coffee is a diuretic & therefore does not slow weight loss--the opposite, in fact, b/c it increases your metabolism. Plus it makes you pee a lot so it helps reduce water retention. :p

I 'm not sure. If you are not eating more than I don't think it is the problem. Some diets like South Beach and I think Adkins do not allow caffeine at least in the start up phases because they say it can cause insulin spikes that can increase appetite. It is also used in diet preparations and does increase metabolism. As said it is a diuretic also. I drink most of mine in the am before my workouts.

Lots of conflicting research on this one. We do know it's a diuretic, but that can hamper weight loss because it gets rid of water, which you need for weight loss. I'm talking plain water. What I do is drink the equivalent amount of water to "chase" the coffee, sort of to offset it's effect, if that makes sense. I did this while I was doing WW too because I'm a die-hard caffeine addict, and I was able to lose weight.

As for the insulin issue, it is believed to mess up the levels, but again there are still two sides to that issue. If you think it's slowing you down, try chasing each cup with an equal amount of water and see if that helps. Also, make sure you're aware of what's going IN the coffee. Sugar, cream, Starbucks, etc.!! I feed my Starbuck's addiction by getting non-fat latte's with sugar free syrup! YUM!!

Maybe it's something else you just haven't thought of keeping you at the same weight?

Let me try and do some research on the issue and see if I can find anything new. I'll post as soon as I have anything.

Okay. I tried all the places I use at work, and came up with nothing new. Staying away from the sites where products are pitched, and the "question and answer" sites, most of the others are fairly consistent with respect to diabetics (type II) staying away from or cutting back on caffeine, and here are just three which talk about this issue:

This one talks about a study done with non-diabetic volunteers, and they don't really reach any "new" conclusions, but it's a start.

ANother coffee addict, I couldn't give it up. Thanks for posting the links though.:)

Yes there was a study done in Australia that showed caffeini consumption before a workout encouraged the body to burn fat cells before it went into the glycogen stores for energy (I hope that's right - I'm sleep-deprived and have been doing DIY floor laying for the past few days!).

I also rememeber reading something that either disproved the theory that caffeine is a diuretic or at least played down its role as a diuretic. This makes sense in my experience because caffeinated drinks go right through me!

Honestly, I think the only detrimental contribution caffeine could be having on your weight loss is in that caffeine high. Caffeine will make you stressed, anxious, sleepless and hypertensive if you have too much and those things are going to make your body fight to hold on to the fat. You may be more sensitive to it than you realise.

I doubt that a chemical(caffeine) that jacks up the metabolism is going to cause you to gain weight. Now if you are adding stuff like cream to it, maybe so. Or, if coffee is causing you hunger and making you eat more, then maybe so.
I thought I'd seen something one time about caffeine having deleterious effects on bone density. Anyone heard that before? Miss C?
I drink one cup of green tea in the morning and then 3 cups of coffee at various times before lunch. If I drink anymore the rest of the workday it's decaf. Then at night I drink another cup of tea.
This is again another thread about someone noticing a slight weight gain via the scale. Scale weight means very little, especially to people who workout regularly. How are your clothes fitting? Any difference there? Are you feeling okay? Looking the way you want to look? I'd use these questions as a gauge instead of bodyweight. At 186 pounds I am heavier than I have ever been but I am also in the absolute best shape of my life.

Mmmmmmmmmm Starbucks Caramel Macchiato is my favourite :)

Hey T! The caffeine and bone density thing seems to have fizzled out. I'm not sure they ever "proved" that theory. If I get a chance I'll take a look.
