There are no guarantees, but eating healthy may not only help you live longer, but more importantly, improve the quality of life by helping you to feel better while you're here.

I think so, big time! If you have lots of anti-oxidents and all those lovely components of food that are studied and shown to reduce cancer, heart disease, diabetes and you stay slim, you are definitely reducing risk factors the way some eaters do wehn they eat with no regard to health. And add to it enough exercise and avoiding stress or dealing with stress, (It's unavoidable, I'm married! LOL!) you can actually override genetic tendencies and most likely survive potential problems should they arise. I am going "home" to Michigan to see my family. I will not be adopting their eating style while I am there. In fact, they eat so differntly than I do, I could get slimmer on vacation.

I saw that the authors of the Okinowa Program have a new book, a plan. I read the first book and the Okinawans are a lovely example of logevity and a clean, active lifestyle. They are among the longest-lived people on earth. Their diet is a huge component of that and they tend to stay very active into their hundreds!

Carole- I just noticed that my coffee drinker looks so much happier than your coffee drinker. Your coffee drinker looks like me in the late afternoon when the caffeine buzz starts to wear off....

Nope - I think it has to do with your stress level. The eating well just makes you look better.

Look, everytime the news shows some 100+ year-old celebrating their birthday, invariably they are some moonshine-lovin hick. Who knows, maybe the booze is a fantastic preservative. ;)

Low stress - I really think that is the answer.

In my case, there's no question about it. I went from being a Type II diabetic to completely off meds of any kind, just by changing my eating and exercise habits. Diabetics definitely have a shorter life expectancy, and the quality of life leaves a lot to be desired as well.

Even now, when I eat badly, I get sick immediately. I get sick to my stomach, have horrible night sweats, get incredibly thirsty, and then I'm sluggish for two or three days afterward. A true food hangover. That's a great deterrent. Too bad everyone doesn't have such immediate effects. It's much more difficult when you don't get sick until years later.

I agree, Nancy. Sometimes, if something is going to happen, such as a disease, I believe it just may be in the cards. Eating well can minimize so many health risks, though, and it absolutely can improve quality of life!

I believe that they have done several studies with rats that show quality of food effects longevity and also caloric amount matter.

Eating the lowest level of calories that are appropriate for your body will lengthen your life. I think it has something to do with efficiency. The extra calories that your body has to process adds to the wear and tear.

Mind you, that isn't a plug for anorexia, the studies are clear that starvation is not an option. The information is for quality food in the right amounts.

All the evidence you need is right there in the new film/documentary "Supersize me". Need I say more?!?!?!?!

And yes, stress is a big killer. Shopgirl (?) is right.

I think maybe you can live longer. I came from a family that grandparents drank Aloe Vera Juice: smelled nasty. My mother ate beee pollen and took a lot of supplements. She went to a holistic
DR.. My grandmother is gone she had breast cancer earlir in life. She came here from Missouri for tests and died in the hospital from lung cancer. She was not a smoker. Maybe it was the years my grandfather smoked before he quit. My mother died from Lou Gerigs Disease (ALS) about 6 years ago. I am trying to do my best to be healthy. I have had uterine cancer. My youngest child was 18 months old. I raised my children on a lot of healthy foods. Homemade breads made with whole wheat flour, and soy flour. At the time I was reading various books and used Adelle Davis' book "Feed Your Kids Right" without preservatives, everything I made was from scratch. My oldest was 30 this year. SO far they are doing well. I did give them lots of vitamins and they took chewable codliver oil. They were hardly ever sick. Maybe I did reverse the pattern, I don't know. Maybe the adults in the family were to late when they started worrying about feeling better.

I'm not sure. My grandma and grandpa died within this last year at 91 and 92 respectively. They ate everything bad you can think of----grandma put bacon grease in her corn bread instead of oil! And they ate fried everything! They ate bacon and stuff like that every day.

BUT, I think one of the reasons they lived so long is they worked VERY hard and were quite active physically, even up until they were too sick and too old to live at home anymore. They never stopped moving. And they were both alwasy slim and fit looking.
