I am 29 years old. I saw the first film of Harry Potter and I did not like it. I have never read the books. Are the books really good written? Is this a book series just for kids ?

I read the first book and hated it. I never saw the movies because they are supposed to be "just like the books". A lot of people I like and respect like these books, but I found them silly and predictable. Very amateurish.

Love them! LOTS of fun :)

I was going through some tough times and it was a WONDERFUL escape!

I had thought I'd hate it but really enjoyed it - shame on me for judging in advance.

Lots of fun

The books (as with most books)are so much better than the movies. IMO the movie was only the scary/exciting/action parts from the book. It was true to the book, but there is so much more character development and text devoted to the relationships between the characters.

I enjoyed them very much. I have read a few aloud to my students (with no objections from parents, as some do not want their children to read these books...a whole different thread!). What I like about them is that I now have students reading who otherwise would not be reading. Any book that a kid will read is a good book!

i much preferred the books. its always fun to piccture the images in your head yourself and the stories are so outrageous and imaginative. i read them out loud to viola. i don't have the 2 newer volumes. the movies are okay i guess but they did leave some stuff out and it seemed rushed just to fit it all in. much prefer to read for the imaginative side of me.

My sister, an adult, read them on the Q-T and told me they were fun and a great escape. I've been meaning to pick one up one copy and read it for fun.....heck, I could use an escape now and then;-) . If you do pick one up please let us know what you think.

Generally, I think the books are better than the movies--there's more detail in them and you get to know the characters and their motivations. I like the movies, though--I really enjoy seeing the books brought to life. Overall the whole series is for kids, but as an adult I read the books anyhow because I think Rowling does a great job of portraying the fictional world that she developed and because I care about the characters she has created. That said, I also find that I get frustrated by the simplistic, predictable and really annoying plot lines and writing devices that Rowling uses, especially in many of the more recent books. I just care enough about the fictional world in the books at this point that I keep reading.

My suggestion--get the first book out of the library and see if you enjoy reading it; if not, no harm. Overall, I think it's worth it--it's not great literature, but it's a lot of fun.

I teach fourth grade. This is my first year with this grade (unless you count my student teaching) and a new building for me, too. I am having a great year and I love this age group!

Hi Mariangeles! Just curious...do they publish the popular American books such as Harry Potter in Spanish or do you take on the challenge of reading them in English? I think that is sooo commendable that you take on the challenge to even converse here!!!

My whole family reads these books (me, DH, son and daughter). In fact, I had to wait for everyone to finish reading the 6th book before I had my crack at it so I just finished it.

We love the books and the movies! I think reading the books first definitely helps you understand the characters and details in the movie but it's not necessary. However, I definitely had a greater appreciation of the movie when it came out after having read the book because of how the movie took everything in my imagination and made it come alive. I mean everything and everybody looked EXACTLY the way JK Rowling described it (e.g. Hogwarts, Hagrid, Dumbledore). That shows a very good talent in descriptive writing when an author is able to accomplish that.

If you don't like the movies, chances are you won't like the books. I've read all of the books and love them, but I simply adore science fiction/fantasy. Not everyone does. They are for teens and preteens, but they are good enough for adults to enjoy. JK Rowlings is a good writer, and the world she created is very detailed and cqan seem "real" when you're reading about it. It can't hurt to pick up the first book to see if the book appeals to you more. Maybe once you really get the idea of what she's trying to create, the movies will be more interesting.

I agree with Christine. One thing I really enjoy about the books as they go along is how JK Rowling seems to have planned each detail out over all the books- something that was mentioned in passing in book 2 may show up again and be explained in book 4, for example. It tells me how much work she has put into them.

I really enjoyed reading as a kid and I love the fact that there is "new" material for me to read that takes me back to those times in my life- grownup books wouldn't be able to pull a Harry Potter kind of book off without making it seem very strange!

Oh yeah, I'm 28 and a half. :D

I love the Harry Potter books! I think they are well written. I use to read them to my children, but now that they are older we fight who will read them first. I win because I paid for them!! HE HE! The movies are ok I was disappointed with the last one though. The books have much more going on which the movies just cannot put into 2 hours. Read the first book and see if you like it. My favorite book is still #3 Prisoner of Azkaban. The character development was so good.
Enjoy

i love the harry potter books... and the movies! i plan to be at the first morning showing on the 18th! (don't do midnight showings... can't stay awake no matter what movie it is!)

I read the first one when it first came out and there was so much hoopla about it. I thought it was an enjoyable, well-detailed kids' book but didn't have much interest in reading any of the others. Then my 7 year old nephew discovered the books last spring ago and is blazing through them (he called me last night to mention that he had finished book 5 , so cute!) I like to be a part of the things he enjoys so I am reading book 3. I'll probably read the whole series now. I think they read like kids' books. Nothing wrong with that if the story works.
