Do you feel sorry for "bad" American Idol contestants?

I was thinking about this this morning, and so many people get all upset by some of the comments Simon, Randy, and Paula dish to these no-talents who audition for the show. I realized this morning that I don't feel sorry for those people. They've watched the show. They know what the judges are looking for (if they've been paying even an inkling of attention). Yet they walk in and stomp out "Like a Virgin" like a hyena on crack and then get upset when the judges tell them they can't sing. The way I see it, those no-talent time-wasters deserve the less-than-kind comments the judges dish. Those yah-hoos are wasting the judges' time, as well as the time of those auditioning who have REAL talent.

But it does make for entertaining TV. }(

RE: Do you feel sorry for

LOL! It does make entertaining TV. I do feel sorry for those who REALLY think they are good and they're going to make it only to be so let down. Some of them are so awful, though. Who's telling them how great they are???  The judges are sometimes unnecessarily rude. Other times, I agree, it's deserving. ;-)

RE: Do you feel sorry for

I always say to my husband, "you would think that someone would tell these people they are not good enough." I'm talking exclusively about the ones who are kind of okay but would never be good enough to actually make it. I mean, doesn't a friend or someone have to say to you--"you know, you're good but just not good enough for that type of competition." Those people I do feel sorry for. The people who clearly just wanted to get on TV--no. I'm actually surprised sometimes that they(the judges)aren't more rude considering how much time they are wasting.

RE: Do you feel sorry for

I feel sorry for some of them who obviously have some kind of developmental problem (like the Special Olympics guy), but not for most. (and with him--- and "Lemur boy", I kind of feel sorry, not just because of AI, but because they are on talk shows, and I just feel they're being somewhat exploited. Or mocked? Are they aware that people are laughing AT them and not with them? I don't know, but it makes me uncomfortable.

What I'm beginning to wonder is how many of these people (who think they "sound like Mariah Carey" or are "a great talent" or whatever) have some kind of emotional/mental disorder. Several of this years 'how aweful can you be' contestants seem rather unbalanced. Or maybe I just am looking for a reason why they think they can sing despite all evidence to the contrary.

WHO in the world is telling these people they have talent? Somebody not wanting to hurt their feelings?

I think the Jersy guy (who was also on "So You Think You Can Dance" --and he can't do that either) has extended his 15 minutes of fame far too long. We didn't really need to see him again on another show, IMO.

Though, don't you now expect something REALLY BAD when in the pre-audition interview, they say HOW GOOD they are, and how much talent they have, and how people tell them they sound just like (insert great voice here)? It seems like an almost sure bet that those are the ones that really tank and couldn't carry a tune in a bucket!

RE: Do you feel sorry for

I have to wonder, since American Idol has been around now for a few seasons, if this is just some people's few minutes of TV time. I've even wondered if go on a dare or something. Some of it seems contrived and like they are just willing to do anything to get on TV. Some, I'm sure, ARE awful and THINK they sound good?!

RE: Do you feel sorry for

Ashamed to admit it, but I've watched AI since season #2...I actually usually don't watch the auditions because I really do feel it is so "staged". It's all for entertainment with only glimpses of promising contestants. And, I agree, it does make me squirm some - not so much with the singing criticisms but with the physical ridiculing - like the special olympics kid as someone mentioned. To see people's faces just fall when the judges start laughing.

I also do agree that "they know what they are getting into" but remember....they have already passed an initial screening by producers PRIOR to going in front of Randy/Paula/Simon, so perhaps they really think they do have what it takes just to get slammed.

And, of course, there are people who just want their 15 minutes of fame - the Panther guy last night? Puhleeze...it was laughable.

I really do enjoy it when they get down to about 30 contestants and start paring them down. That's when it gets interesting to me.

Isn't it amazing how popular that show has become?

RE: Do you feel sorry for

There is an article on the REality TV website written by someone who auditioned in Hollywood this time. Basically she got 20 seconds singing time in front of a table and was sent home. So the pre-screeners are sending a certain amount of "kooks" through for TV entertainment, and I have a feeling a good many know it, and are possibly told to ham up the disappointment.

I did like the old fellow though.

RE: Do you feel sorry for

I'm very skeptical on how much "reality" is on reality television these day. Do I feel sorry for anyone? No. They know what they are getting into and are looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Didn't 2 of the kids get agents already? It's all for entertainment value. If there is someone actually pre-auditioning these people then most of these people wouldn't be getting through to the next round. It's called money. How many nights have they been airing the auditions?? Fox and AI are getting rich.

RE: Do you feel sorry for

I guess my feelings are the really bad ones are just a set-up for our entertainment. I mean some of them (yes, like the panther guy last night) are too ridiculous...:)

RE: Do you feel sorry for

NOT even a little bit. They have watched this show just like I have and KNOW what 2 expect. I would love to slap or choke the ones that tell some of these people they can sing.

RE: Do you feel sorry for

I think that the majority of the "bad" ones just want to be on tv. They know what they are in for . They want to be seen on tv, imo. I really don't think that there are many mentally ill people on that show. I am sure that a few of those ppl think they can sing but most of them just want their 15 minutes.
