Do you ever just need a break?

I haven't stepped in a few weeks. Not sure why - just got burned out. Needed a break from worrying about when to fit my workout in, obsessing about exercise, losing weight...does anyone ever just quit for a while?

Don't get me wrong, I only lasted about 2 weeks with NO exercise because I started feeling blobbish. I have restarted some running/walking and some treadmill/elliptical/weights at our YMCA. I did also do B&G today. But, I think I'll stick to weight Cathe workouts - I may do GymStyle Legs - I have it and have never used it.

I don't know, maybe I'm not losing weight because my body was so used to doing essentially the same step routines week to week.

I'm rambling and kind of venting, just didn't know if others ever just felt like they needed not only the physical breather but also a mental breather for a while. If you did, why and what did you do to get out of the slump?

YES! I do need breaks, usually seasonally but sometimes more often. I think it's tied to weather...... It usually lasts a week or more and I have to "just snap out of it" - I start to feel like a sloth and a lump on the couch. I find that I'm re-energized and get good results quickly when I return to workouts.

Keep track of what you're feeling and see if you can pinpoint reasons that you might be able to change. Otherwise, enjoy the break and get back into exercising soon!

Take care - jasper

Hi Heidi- I am currently mid-slump but I took the opportunity to really clean up my eating and I'm seeing results-I did Gym Styles for 3 months and next I'm going to do P90X in about a week or 2. I just tell myself that I am going to get back in to it-it's not an option to quit-it was a long road to get this fit so I want to stay that way--deb

Yep. Last year around this time a slump hit and I started doing Pilates at a studio. That lasted about 6 months and then I slumped again and went back to the DVD's. Burn out hit again about 3 months ago and I started P90X. That has really re-energized me. I've never needed to take weeks off from exercise, I've just needed time off from certain types of exercise.

I switch things up a lot otherwise I'll get bored. A few months of heavy weights and running is followed by a few months of circuits and other more fun cardio. I recently rediscovered my bike, so I'm really enjoying cycling. But I do experience times between my next "passion" where working is arduous, but then I figure out how to switch things up, and it becomes less like a chore and more fun again.

I also take breaks. Not very long one's (maybe 3-4 days max), but usually it's when my body tells me I just can't do it anymore. I actually tend to loose a few pounds when I take breaks. My stomach (internally) shrinks, I don't eat as much because I'm not using up a lot of calories, and my muscles snap back from all the hard work they've been put through. Someone mentioned P90x rotation... when I finished mine up, I didn't know what to do. I had missed Cathe and wanted to get back to her workouts, but since P90x isn't really cardio intensive and the only Cathe hard-core weight workouts I own are Slow and Heavy, I hit I slump. I've just found that varying my routine helps me climb out of these slumps. I've recently joined a gym and use Cathe on my cardio days.

Enjoy the rest and happy resting!

Thanks for all the advice and "been there, done that"s. I really am enjoying the change - been for several walks/runs lately. I have spring fever in a bad way, and it's been nice enjoying the little bit of nice weather we are having (not that it will last long - will be in the 30's by this weekend:( )

I do hear a lot about p90X on these forums - is it more weight training vs. cardio then? What kind of equip. is needed?

Heidi

Sure - I get tired of doing the same thing. That's why in the summer, I like to add cycling. We're intelligent beings, not goldfish....we can't do the same thing everyday.

Yep, took one yesterday. Just had to take a physical and mental break from all the exercise. Even one day makes a difference.
This AM I am ready to tackle KickMax and my booty workout--am doing June Rock Bottoms rotation....:)
