Do you eat after an evening workout?

I know you are suppose to nourish your body after working out, but if you work out in the evening (after dinner) should you still eat something after your workout and if so what (protein/carb)? Since eating close to bed time is usually a bad thing, I wasn't sure if it was better to go to bed without eating after a workout or to eat and then go to bed. What works for you?

Jean,

Occasionally I get caught with a nighttime workout, and usualy I'll have a protein smoothy afterwards. After a hard workout, no matter what time day or night, I cannot go without something afterwards.

I on the other hand only finish evening workouts with a light shake made up of coconut milk, protein powder, flax seed, shot of orange juice, plain yogurt and a handful of blueberries....mmmmmmmmm. I never touch donuts - And if you believe that one, I have beautiful swamp land for sale in western wisconsin.

People should know better than to post questions at night when Melody, Michele and Briee are on the board and BORED.:7 :7

Briee-

Darn, I totally forgot my great comeback. It must be late.:p

ETA: Jean, I am so sorry we completely hijacked your thread, but MY first post was for real.:)

LOL and yawning at the same

My apologies to Jean who has a perfectly legitimate question!!! You will get some educated responses in the AM from much more serious persons to be sure!! Be of good cheer and be ye patient.

Ok, this is probably the wrong thing to do, but I eat dinner after my workout. The only time I can get my weights in is after work, so I come home, workout, then eat dinner, and it's a late dinner--near 9 p.m. I haven't gained weight doing this--I'm at a healthy weight and have been stable at this weight for 6 years now. I think I heard somewhere on a news show that the whole thing about eating before bed makes you fat is wrong. It's only if you're spending the night eating excess calories/fat/sugar that it's a problem. But I could be wrong.

Hi Jean.

When I worked out at night, after dinner, I would always have a snack. I would have inevitably worked up an appetite anyway! You need to re-fuel your body no matter what time it is! If you eat right and exercise, don't worry about the eating late will make you gain weight thing. I still snack between 8-10pm almost every night even though I work out in the mornings now. I don't have trouble cause I stick to healthy foods.

HTH!:)

If I know that I am going to do my workout in the evening (which often you do know), I try to make my afternoon snack a little bit bigger than usual and then make my "dinner" (after workout) a little bit smaller. That way, you are eating something but not a huge meal.

I am of the opinion it's not when you eat, it's how much. It doesn't matter what time of day you take in the calories, it just matters how many you take in overall.

I eat after dinner, and sometimes during the night if I wake up hungry. I also eat all day long.

I have been working out at night lately and i eat afterwards.
I am usually starving by then.
I get home around 6:30 and throw something in the micro to defrost , work out and make dinner. I just try really hard to stick to smaller portions instead of big plates full.
I would die by morning if i didn't eat.
