Do we realize how good we have it?

I had to share this one with you guys.
My daugther is 8.A little boy who lives down the street as been comming up to play with her off and on over the last year.He is very well mannered and seems to be a good kid.But his family is far from finacially stable. His mom seems to be a bit older and as another child from a previous relationship, who is grown up and gone. His dad is gone away to find work. They don't have any transportation and she doesn't have a job.
Today he came up to the house and I think at times he just lets things spill.....if his mom only knew, I think he would be in a lot of trouble. He starts telling me that him and his mom may get kicked out of their apt, b/c she is not paying her bills. He didn't know what he was having for dinner b/c they don't have any groceries.I invited him to stay at our house for something to eat, he couldn't call his mom and ask her b/c she doesn't have a phone anymore. He claims to have some money in a college fund(that his dad keeps depositing money in)and he paid last monthes rent with that b/c his mom didn't have any.Truth be known, she probably as his bank account drained and he doesn't even know it.His mom was also raising money for a volunteer service she does and (apparently) while his dad was home last time, he stole the money and thats why he had to go find work.Since then his mom and dad broke up.I asked him why his mom doesn't get a job(that pays) and he said b/c she doesn't have a way back and forth.
First I felt bad b/c we have pretty much whatever we need.We are doing o.k for ourselves, bills are paid on time and when we can spit out $300 for new aerobics videos...we are doing o.k.
Then I started thinking again. There is no need for someone to be doing without. The govt.takes care of people who cannot find work. They get money handed to them. They get all of their bills paid, including their rent.So why isn't she paying hers?
I just feel bad for him b/c I hope he isn't doing without b/c his mom as a drug or gambling problems.Something doesn't make sense here.
And how in God's name is a child suppose to grow up normal and be good citizens,if these are the kinds of people raising them?
I think we should just be so greatfull that we turned out the way we did and we are teaching our kids how to work and get the better things in life.
I still feel bad for the kid but I think that she is being irresponisble and not paying her bills. It burns me that we lose so much money in taxes and it doesn't get anyone anywhere.
I have all the respect in the world for people who need social assistants.Keep their bills up to date and don't waste the money that is given to them in beer, drugs, cigs, and gambling machines. But for the most part, people around here who the system is supporting are just wasting our taxes and obviously she is one of them.People who abuse the system, should be cut off.
Any thoughts?

Hi Lori,I'm Thinking this is so sad . Kids should never take on adult problems . Sounds like Hes taking care of his mother . You are a nice person to listen to him and to be there for him. You just listening could make a big differance in his life . Hugs to you :) :) :) :) :)

He is taking on his moms problems. He helps her shovel the drive way,he helps her walk to the store(if she goes at all, most times she makes him go)and according to him, he helps pay the bills(not sure if I beleive this or not)One of his stories tonight, was he got bit my spider while he was in the States and had to go to the emergency room.Im thinking, you don't have money for rent, how'd you get to take a trip? I just let him tell his stories.Maybe they make him feel important?
I was going to tell him tonight actually, that he should stay a good boy,do good in school and when he gets out of school he will get a good job. Some encouragment for him.I just hope he doesn't follow the pattern.

I totally understand the taking advantage of the system part. See I live on the Navajo Indian Rez and everyone I know has financial assistance from the gov. They all drive brand new sport cars and have huge sound systems in them. They don't even have to work! Everything is given to them b/c they were borne native. The kids I went to school with were given $50,000 scholarships and all expences paid to go to the top ranking schools in the country! I on the other hand, graduated top ten and a year early and received NO financial aid! The kids here aren't even serious students. I don't see tax dollars being put to good use here at all!

Lori, you are sweet to listen to this little boy and offer him encouragement. I think it's sad for a child to know so much of his mother's financial problems. I bet it causes a lot of stress, he is only 8. Hopefully his mom will have brighter days ahead. Thankfully this child has school, and nice people like you.
