Do men shave their armpits?

I was looking at some of the pictures for the STS workouts. It looks as though some of the guys have pretty smooth underarms. Is this a new thing in the male fashion world? I haven't been around an overwhelming number of men's armpits lately and was wondering if this is something common. Anybody have any thoughts?

I think it has to do with modeling per se. It's just aesthetics. A HUGE hairy armpit would be quite a turn off during a close up of shoulder or tricep work. Major ewwww IMO. x(

Male bodybuilders and fitness models do shave (or wax) their pits (as well as their chest and backs if necessary). For contests, male body builders remove hair from their entire bodies, including arms and legs (maybe not 'privates', but they must groom there a bit, because the briefs they wear are pretty skimpy).

If you look at the covers of Men's Health and Muscle and Fitness and other men's fitness/weight training magazines, they are all 'manscaped.' It gives a much cleaner line for showing the muscle. I'm pretty sure the men in STS are fitness models (they were found during a 'talent search') and so they keep groomed for their profession.

I'm not sure, but I think metrosexuals may also shave/wax (they definitely do more 'manscaping' than the average blue-collar worker, and have their backs waxed if necessary).

I actually prefer a relatively hairless look (except on the head!). If a man is too hairy (especially if they have back and/or shoulder hair) it's rather repulsive to me.

OMG...he's on my top five!!! now, i remmeber exactly why!!! or maybe it was that scene in "jarhead" with the santa hat AND NOTHING ELSE!!! yum!}( }( }(

Many male athletes also shave. Most of the basketball players do. So do swimmers and bikers (they even shave their legs - it reduces drag). Overall, it's just more hygenic. I prefer the shaved or very trimmed back look. A lot of body hair is just gross. Especially on white guys, when it tends to be long and stringy. yuck
(Jake looks good, but would be even better if he trimmed that stuff back)

No way! But, then, again, I'm not into the Nair-look on guys. And the only athlete I find hunky these days is LeBron...and he remains hairified.

To each her own.....

My dad's side is Lebanese.
We call my brother Tank Top because shirtless he literally looks like he's wearing one! EEEEWWW!!

I used to shave it for him in the summertime when we were in high school. His wife gets the priviledge now!

My DH is pretty hairless and couldn't grow sufficient facial hair if he tried for a year - I loooooove it!

I find that it's more and more common for men to shave their chest, legs, armpits, etc (my BIL is one of them). I also know many that like to get facials and wax their eyebrows. They are taking care of themselves more and prefer a more "manicured" look. I think it looks great! :)

Thanks for the responses. I especially like the Jack pic. Forgive me for being cut off from the world, but who is he and where can I find him!?

It's Jake Gylenhall (sp?), one of the actors from "Brokeback Mountain."

The only one of those I've seen is "City Slickers." However, I don't think he quite looked like that at age 11.

That was a pretty hilarious clip! Thanks so much for sticking it up here for us. I have to say, it's only when you see a guy in a dress that you realize how differently women and men carry their bodies and walk.....Jake striding about in a dress.....that's quite an image!

He was also in "Day After Tomorrow" which has some of the best special effects EVER in a movie, IMHO. (Note that Jake was not one of the special effects--just thought I should clarify that :p)

During the summer I try to keep the body hair shorter, not shaved. More of it is exposed and in the case of the "pits" and other parts where body parts join up it can just get nasty when you start to sweat.

I don't think I'd ever wax or totally shave but trim is ok with me.
