diet

hi,

I am trying to lose about 5-10 pounds. Should I cut out any food groups such as the low carb craze. It all gets so confusing. SOme books say 3 meals 2 snacks, some say no carbs etc. Any good dieting advice is greatly appreciated.

I just went to a conference on obesity and the crisis for folks like me in healthcare...Americans steadily got fatter over the past 40 years, but since 2001, it has increased 400 percent! The low carb craze is a disaster. I followed the nutritionist's plan over on the TLT site, minimizing grains and dairy and using healthier fats, lean means and veggies...cholesterol soared...went back to lots of grains, no red meat (well, almost none) or hardly any meat at all, lots of veggie burgers, homemade yogurt, oatmeal etc...dropped 6 pounds and cholesterol plummeted back to normal.....in 8 weeks... The one plan that has people buzzing is the Body for life plan...weight watchers too, though I don't like all the processed food...ALL diets work, but long term....its calories out has to be more than calories in....and its much easier to eat the oreo than spend the time working it off!

Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman recommends a plant-based diet that not only helps one lose weight, but do it in a sustainable way that improves your health risks.

Definitely don't do "low/no carb." Our bodies need carbs. Instead, if you were to eliminate any 'food group,' I would recommend that it be processed foods (things that come in boxes and cans that are not whole foods). Just by doing that, you can be healthier and leaner.

I agree with Kathryn on this one - I would dump the processed foods, and try to eat as close to natural foods as possible. A really good trick that Dr. Fuhrman suggests is to start each lunch and dinner with a big salad. If you eat salad first, you fill up sooner and eat less of the higher calorie foods.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I have found that when I concentrate more on fruits, veggies and whole grains, I have more energy, feel a lot better, and lose weight much more easily. I really try to get no more than 10% of my calories from animal products.
