Diet Pop versus Coffee

Ok I am trying to quit drinking diet pop - I drink two diet cokes or two diet dews or something EVERY DAY! I love the taste - love caffeine - I just plain love diet pop - - but I hear its not good for you because of sodium amounts?? Is this true or just a rumor?

I am switching to coffee in the morning - but is that really any better for you??

Give me the scoop on each all of you diet pop and coffee drinkers? What is better overall for my health? i have to have creamer and equal in my coffee if that helps......

Neither one is a particulary good choice, IMO.

Diet pop doesn't have much sodium in, that I'm aware of. But it does have lots of artificial colors and flavors, questionable artificial sweeteners, and high levels of phosporus (the 'coke' and 'pepsi' and other cola styles) which can leach minerals from your bones. IMO, there is no benefit to it.

Coffee contains not only caffeine, but other chemicals. I would in no way call it 'healty.'

Of the two, one cup of coffee in the a.m. wouldn't be as bad as an equivalent amount of diet pop.

Though if you're looking for something that is not just "not as bad as an alternative" but actually healthy, I would recommend Yerba Maté or Green tea.

I was SO addicted to diet sodas, but I began replacing them with the Lipton Diet White Tea, which I know isn't much better, but I knew that the phosporus in sodas was not good for my bones. Lately, I've tried to ween myself off the tea too and turn just to water (and coffee in the a.m.). I'm trying to not eat as much artificial sweeteners, as they make me very moody, like sugar does (I have no idea why). It has been a weening process, but I have found without the sodas, I feel much better and I don't retain as much water AND my cellulite is decreasing. I do still drink a glass of red wine with dinner though too.

I can't help. I drink both. :p But I do stay away from caffienated drinks--not necessarily for health reasons, just b/c they make me nervous & jittery. I have one cup of coffee in the morning, water during the day, & Diet 7Up (I am a confessed addict) at night.

BTW, I am currently drinking pumpkin spice coffee in the morning. Darn that stuff is good! :9

I've managed to give up soda completely except for the rare occasion bit of pop when I am out but I drink coffee like a FIEND!!!}( I try to alternate between caf and decaf just so that it's not AS BAD for me but must admit that except for after dinner I tend to not do a very good job at sticking to it!:p I also drink alot of water. I figure atleast I am not cosuming all of the sugar in coke. I can't stand diet sodas so that wouldn't be an option for me. I use Splenda in my coffee...again, not good...but I can't give up EVERY vice I have!}(

Hmm the decrease in cellulite would be great - well I guess maybe I will give it a serious go next week -- no more diet pop and only coffee in the morning....

Is this the place where I confess my addiction to BOTH coffee and diet coke? I wouldn't think that one diet soda would be bad a day. I have heard that coffee is good for your heart, speeds up your metabolism, and suppresses your appetite! You can't beat that, sounds like the perfect addition to any diet.

I personally don't think your current intake of diet pop is excessive, neither for its sodium content nor for its caffeine content. And I think the nostrums about carbonated beverages affecting "cellulite" (a word I still cannot write without putting in quotation marks) are utter hogwash. "Cellulite" is simply fat stores underneath skin that is textured in a certain (and certainly annoying) way, and two diet pops a day isn't going to increase or decrease those fat stores.

I vote: enjoy your diet pops and forget about it. Heaven knows you have to say "no" to so many other pleasurable foods and beverages. Why worry about this one?

Don't drink pop,but I love, adore, can't live without coffee!!!!! I won't be giving it up unless I find out absolutely that it will kill me,and maybe not even then!

I have to agree with Laura and her review of the pumpkin spice coffee.....mmmmmmmmmm!

Also, even though it might be a stretch to call coffee healthy, it does contain some antioxidants. As far as I know, there is no nutritional benefit to colas.

I also find that I get more cravings when I drink diet cola. So, I tend to steer clear of diet cola as much as possible.

But, as with everything, I think moderation is the key.

What about that new diet coke plus that has vitamins in it --totally healthy (kidding).

I enjoy both diet soda and coffee with coffee-mate creamer, and I noticed that diet dew was mentioned--that's my favorite too. I hate to say it, but if I had a glass of water and a glass of diet soda in front of me--the choice would not be challenging. I believe in challenging my kidneys and the fat stores in my body the chemicals, not excreted, decide to make their home. Cheers! But in all seriousness--good luck trying to kick the habit.
