Ok, now how much can we not eat.
I am rying to hit it hard, eating every 3 hours, something small.
I am so discousted. I am starving. It is really hard to eat 1/2 cup brown rice 2 oz chicken and a peice of fruit for a meal. I am watching the calories closely . Every 3 hours i am starved. I went shopping last night and bought protien bars and lots of fruits and veggies , lowfat smoothies, egg beaters, fat free cheese and fat free salad dressing.
The canteloupe i bought is awful, fruits are terrible this time a year, a pack of blueberries (1 cup ) 4 bucks.
I made chili last night with ground turkey and enough veggies to give ya gas for a month(haha). The scale is not budging. I am working out hard and staying around 1500 cal day(500 deficeit).
What am i doing wrong?
I hate pre packaged food. I am a good cook. I can't go lower, i will be dead tired.
Help

Anne -
If I ate only 1500 calories, I'd be starving too. I need to stay much closer to 2000. If you enjoy cooking, can't you just try to cook a little differently instead of buying prepackaged stuff? And remember that just because something says "fat free" doesn't mean it's low in calories. Be sure you read the packages. Are you eating lots of nutrient dense foods - whole grains and things that really fill you up?

I'm not a dietician or very good at giving diet advice. But lots of people here are - I know you'll come up with some good help. Now, go EAT something.;-)

I agree w/ Shannon. I think with all the working out people do around here, 1500 calories is way too low. That's probably why you are starving. Also, are you getting protein everytime you eat? Try to do that w/ complex carb and a fat (very important) which should help you stay filled up a bit longer.

Depending on your stats, 1500 could very well be too low as the others said. I zigzig eating about 1500 calories and 2000 calories but those #s were figured out for me based on my stats. There have been several sites and such suggested here for figuring out your calorie needs...why not do a search and see what kind of #s you get?

HTH!:)

I don't think of it as a diet, I think of it as learning how to eat right, and it takes our bodies time to adjust, our stomach is used to getting a certain amount of food, and yeah its gonna rebel when it gets less, but it will adjust.

I know cause I had to retrain myself after a few months of not eating healthy, and I still cheat, but I try not to over do.

I lower my food intake until I start to lose, and keep it there til I lose what I want, then I up it just enough that I don't gain anything and keep it there.

But this is something I started doing cause I had to goal to get to.
I am 46, and 5'2" and about 5 days a week I eat about 1200 calories a day, now thats me I am not telling anyone else this is what they should do, it works for me thats it. I cheat just a little on the weekends, but not alot.

I am eating something small every 3 hours as well...sticking around 1500 calories as well and I am hungry too. Sometimes it is VERY frustrating because I am hungry but I am trying to lose the last 10lbs. If it helps...I try to refocus and realize that my body is eating the fat and that's why I am hungry. This can help alot. Does your stomach feel flatter? Sometimes after the 3rd or 4th day I'll eat a little more just to feel a little more satisfied. I believe you see some weight loss. Are you in the last 10 lb range like me because it is a "slow" process? If you can lose 1lb a week at this point you're doing great. I am a big believer is one cheat day a week is a must which would equal really one cheat meal. Its good to confuse the body which is why I think zigzagging is a good thing

One more piece of advice...add some Omega oils in your diet. I take 1TB of flaxseed oil a day (I pour it on my 1 piece of high grain bread for breakfast) and then Primrose oil and CLA capsules. I believe they have you feel a little more satisfied. I still stay within my calorie range too.

IT IS SO DISCOURAGING.
I eat really healthy , no breads under 3 gram fiber. I buy barilla plus pasta. I live on peppers, onions and garlic.
I hate oatmeal. I will eat any fruit, salads, all veggies except for spinach, asparagus. I cook really healthy.I once in a while use frozen veggies, i try to buy fresh and cook them.
Last night i made a big pot of chili.
turkey burger cooked and rinsed, 2 green peppers. 2 onions, 2 hot peppers, 2 large cans beans, i drain them, 2 can diced tomatoes,i small can v-8, plus chili powder.
This is an example of my cooking.
I ate 1 1/2 cups.
I only eat a lean cusine or something at work for time and convience. I am usually buisy and need something.
It is usually a piece of fruit, or a protien bar.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like you are miserable, and eating shouldn't be miserable.

Add a huge green salad before you eat that measly portion of brown rice, chicekn and piece of fruit. It will be much more statisfying, and more nutritious as well.

I find that the closer I stick to whole foods, with emphasis on veggies, the better I feel (though I'm not "on a diet," just my lifestyle).

Replace protein bars with real food. Don't be afraid of fat, but get it from healthy sources (avocados, nuts, hemp).

Stress can also cause the body to hold onto fat/weight, so maybe stressing about this diet is just addiing to the problem?

I tried the eating every 3 hrs. I found I had to eat every 2 to 2 1/2 hrs. to keep from starving. I think that made it about 1800-1900 cal. some days. I couldn't maintain eating like that. I'm one who doesn't naturally over eat or think about food, except when I'm hungry (then look out!). This eating every few hours had me CONSTANTLY thinking of food and starving and percentage's, etc.. This way of eating had consumed my whole life. I was now a food freak and I hated it.

So, now I just eat when I'm hungry and eat what I want. I mostly try to eat good clean food, but don't obsess over it. I don't worry if I have protein with my carb and a healthy fat to make it right. It's to crazy for me. I don't freak out if I eat something bad, I enjoy it and go on with my day. Some days I eat 3 meals, some days 2, some days I just snack on oranges all day. It's soooooo freeing!!!

I'm actually a few pounds lighter than when I was eating 5-6 meals a day for 4 mo. straight!

Sunnyside-I too am lighter when I don't eat 5-6 meals a day. I however eat very low calorie and I know this will come back to get me sooner or later. Right Debbie(boybert)?

Terri

ETA-Anne eventually your body stops being hungry whicj is another problem I have. For you though maybe do something to get your mind off the hunger until it is time to eat. Please remember this is not HEALTHY advice I am giving you. Just ways to get past the hunger.

I tend to agree with those that have stated that you are not eating enough. You very well could be in what's called "starvation mode". Listen to your body...it's telling you it's not getting enough good food.

If you're working out hard on a consistent basis you're defecit is more than likely a lot more than 500 calories. You probably need to bump up your calorie intake in order to start losing again. You're body's holding on to whatever it has for fear that it isn't going to get enough food to sustain itself given all of the energy your expecting it to put out with your workouts.

I eat about 2000 calories a day and workout 6 days a week. Some days if I know I have a hard workout coming up I'll even eat more. We can get to a point in our weightloss endeavor (especially if we are pushing ourselves physically through tough workouts) when we have to suspend our concept of huge calorie deficits...this can in effect have the opposite effect on our weightloss and training goals. Most people when they hit a plateau like this find that if they increase their calorie intake they start to shed fat again.

Keep up the good work!!

I just looked at your pictures and I truly stand behind my last post...you look great!!! You're in the phase where you are just trying to lose a few more pounds and tone up. 1500 calories is no where near enough for you in this stage of the game...especially if you're pushing yourself with resistance training as well. Your body isn't getting enough fuel to burn off some as energy and use the rest for muscle building. Eat girl eat!! I bet if you bumped up your intake 300 calories or so (if not more, but increase gradually)you'd feel much better physically, thereby increasing the level of intensity you can give to your workouts, thereby getting even better results!!

Great advice here!

Glad to see too there are other women eating similar calories to mine. I don't track every bite but I know I'm coming in at about 2000 calories per day. I work out six days a week, so anything less and I'm starving and crabby. I would chime in and say try to eat more.

I read something recently that said not eating enough was one of the biggest barriers to successful weight loss for women. Eventually your body gives you the finger and refuses to budge one more pound. :D

Ok you haven't seen me naked ok.
I wouldn't care , but the fat layer over the muscle.'
The muscle is there. The abs are there,it is the god forsaken fat layer. I can't take it. I have been lifting now for 2 years. The firm then Cathe starting in August. Cathe's tapes made a difference.
I remember my 1st try at a pike on the ball. I fell over howling,
Never thought i would be able to do it.
I can now.
I am just looking for some ideas. I have been doing 2000 for a while so i figured drop it and maybe it will come off.

Trust me I completely understand the illusion of clothes;) . I'm right there with ya on that one. But you still don't look like you have a whole lot of body fat to lose...it looks like what you've been doing so far has given you good results.

All I can say is I know for me I can't go below 1800 calories a day. If I do I feel really sluggish, and my workouts aren't up to par energy wise. All I can say is listen to your body. Why don't you try zig zagging your diet and maybe eat 1500 one day and then 2000 the next. See if your body responds to that. Also make sure you're pushing yourself to your max with the resistance training to increase your muscle mass as muscle burns calories (but I'm sure you know that...just trying to throw out ideas). It sounds like you are on the right track it's just you need to figure out how to tweek things to push your body out of its plateau...maybe change up your workout routines if you've been doing the same stuff for a while.

I myself am struggling with the last inch or so off my waist...I can't get it to budge either. All I can do is keep eating clean, doing my workouts, and patiently wait for the flat tummy :D !! Speaking of which I tried those pikes for the first time yesterday and couldn't do them for the life of me!! I'm glad to hear you struggled as well and eventually conquered them:) :) !! Gives me hope for myself.

Ditto what Kathryn said!

Anne, Kathryn's hit the nail on the head that the first order of business just has to be to make changes to your eating so that you're not miserable. Trust me, I have BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT kind of dieting, and believe me it is counterproductive. You aren't going to get the results you want from starving yourself, and you won't stick with the kind of eating regimen you're on right now anyhow because it's just dreadful. So you'll end up discouraged, cranky and hungry. Nothing that's good for you should make you feel that way!

Kathryn's right. Your meals should be fuel for your body, certainly, but they should also bring enjoyment to your life, and you should feel satisfied when you eat.

Ditch the bars, concentrate on whole foods, add one or two or more humongous colorful salads to your day, and don't be fearful of the good fats. All good things in moderation. :)

Good luck to you!
