Did AOS Newport for first time!

Wow -- I just got done doing AOS Newport for the first time! It was such an intense workout, but so much fun! My arms are shaking as I type this!}( I was so proud of myself, too, since I did Turkish Getups for the first time with my 15-pound KB. (I'd been using a dumbbell as a sub.)

I noticed during the end credits that Anthony thanks some doctors and an oncology department. Does anyone know if he's had cancer recently?

Thanks to everyone who recommended this workout! :)

Wow, Christine, that's so amazing! I was blown away by him already, but now I'm even more so. What an incredible guy!

I just got providence in the mail today. I am really excited to do it, but have not gotten my kettlebell yet. I hope I didn't go too heavy. I watched the clip on his website about what weight to get and based on that I am getting 35. I hope I don't kill myself.

Peggie,

Have you worked out with kettlebells before? Providence is a great workout but 35 pounds might be a little too heavy. I'm using 30#'s now and can do about 5 or 6 swings with 35's. Be careful. There are some movements that I go as low as 18 pounds.

Hi Leanne!

I am starting a KB rotation. I have The Iron Core Way 1 & 2, Kettlebell Goddess and The Kettlebell Way to your perfect body (AOS Providence remake).

I am looking to purchase one more KB work out. I suppose you would recommend AOS Newport? I am also considering ordering Firepower along with it!}(

I know, after watching Providence, I am thinking of getting a 20 or 30. Luckily, I have not purchased the kettlebell yet. Thanks for the input.

Hi Peggie -- Jane's right that it might not be a good idea to start with a 35-pound. I started with a 15-pound one, and then quickly purchased a 20-pound one, which I mostly just use for swings. I think that the recommendation for women is to start with an 18-pound one. :)

Hi Wendy -- What a great idea to do a rotation that's just based on KB's! I had been thinking about trying to do the same thing, but I might just add in one extra day, so I'm up to two days a week. I would definitely recommend Newport! It was really intense, but a lot of fun!}( Do you also have Keith Weber's Extreme KB Cardio Workout (http://www.dragondoor.com/dv052.html)? It's another really fun -- and really challenging! -- one. Keep us posted on how your rotation goes!:)

Oooh Leanne, the Keith Weber DVD looks scary, but very challenging. Do you use the 20 pounder for just swings or do you do the rest of the exercises with it too? How often have you done the DVDs and do you feel you are getting stronger? I am just wondering how soon a person would move up to the next size kettlebell. On the AOS website, it sounded like I should use the 35 pounder, but like I said, after watching the DVD, holy crap, I think I would probably kill myself. What are your thoughts and thanks for your input.

Hi Peggie!

So far, I've only been able to use the 20-pounder for swings and maybe a couple of other exercises. I honestly think that 35 pounds would be WAY too heavy to start out with. The thing about the KB workouts is that most are circuits, where you maybe start with an exercise (like swings) that works your legs, but then you maybe do something that requires you to use more arm strength. If you use a KB that's too heavy, you'd seriously compromise your form, and you could end up hurting yourself.

I probably didn't need to get the 20-pound KB as soon as I did, but I wanted to really feel the swings in my legs. (I had been looking forward to getting DOMS from it!}( ) For the Newport DVD I did yesterday, I pretty much used my 15-pound KB for the entire workout, except for swings, when I got out my 20.

Do you have a Target or a sporting goods store near you that sells the KB's? I'd recommend heading over there and playing around a bit with the various sizes. I thought that I would start by buying a 20, but when I went to Target to play with how they felt (I actually tried doing a few swings with it still in the package when no one was in that aisle!:+), I realized that a 15-pound one would be plenty heavy for me as a newbie! ;-)

I've only been doing one KB workout a week for maybe about six weeks, but I've already noticed a difference in my strength ability. For example, I've been using an eight-pound dumbbell to do Turkish getups, but yesterday I was finally able to use my 15-pound KB to do them.

I also try to play with the KB's a bit when I do other strength workouts. For instance, on days when I work legs with a Cathe DVD, I might add in some KB swings between a few sets. Kathryn gave me this idea, and it's been great!

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have other questions that a newbie like me can help with! :)

Hi Wendy -- I forgot to mention that Firepower requires *two* KB's of the same size, which is why I haven't ordered it. At this point, I can't justify buying another 15-pounder, but I sure do want to so that I can get Firepower, too!}( I think it's going to have to wait, though!

Would you mind sharing what your rotation looks like? I'd love to take a peek at it! :)

Thanks for the input Leanne. I think I will get the 20 and use dumbbells for some of the other stuff. I can order from Scheels with free shipping, so that helps. We only have a walmart and kmart here. Have to go to Rapid or Sioux Falls for any major shopping. I am really excited to do these workouts, although I can see they are going to be extremely challenging. BTW, are you going to the August RT.

Hi Peggie -- Glad to help! I think it's a good idea to get either a 15 or 20 to start. A 15 might honestly be more versatile at first . . . . Of course, you could always order the 20, and, if you find it's too tough, you could also order the 15 afterwards, esp. since you get free shipping. They really are a lot of fun!

Where exactly is Pierre located? We were in the Dakotas last summer, and it's so beautiful there! We visited my great aunt, who has a farm right on the border, near Frederick.

Yes, I'll be on the August RT. :) Will you be on that one, too? It'd be fun to meet in person! :)

P.S. Thanks for mentioning Scheels! We don't have them out here in California, and it seems like they have great stuff! Love the free shipping, too!

Leanne,

Thanks for the input.

I am using one 15 pound bell right now. I want to buy another 15 pounder to make a set since KBG has several 2 bell exercises in it and also buy a single 20 pounder as well. Once I have all of that I should be set to do whatever work out comes my way for a while!}(

I will definatley purchase Newport right away and will consider either Firepower or the Cotter work out you mentioned for the future because buying EVERYTHING all at once is a bit cost prohibitive right now.

Here is the rotation I am planning on doing:

1) f/b bell work out
2) hiit + steady state cardio
3) u/b only with bells or traditional style
4) hiit + steady state cardio
5) f/b bell work out
6) hiit + steady state cardio
7) rest

I have opted for an upper body only work out as my third because in my (short) experience with the bells, they work your core and lower body TONS more then the upper body so I wanted to add in some extra upper body to even it out. I've been told it's a good idea by more experienced KB'ers so I'm going with it and will see what happens. }(

Hi Wendy,

Your rotation looks great! Thanks for sharing it! I know what you mean about how expensive everything is! It's a shame that they're not a lot cheaper! :-(

How do you like the KBG workout? I know that Amy Bento is also supposed to be releasing a two-KB workout soon, too. Oh no! Now I'm starting to talk myself into getting a second 15-pounder. Must resist! ;-)

Hi Leanne.

I have only done parts of KBG a couple of times but I like it so far. There's no background music during the work outs so if that bothers you then you may not like it...or you can play your own. The instructor is also not tops in the personality dept but that doesn't matter to me. The dvd is broken down into several short (20-30 mins) premixes such as full body strength, upper body, lower body, abs and core and then 2 others. One is a split focus of strength and cardio and I think the other is all cardio focused. You can also do the entire DVD in one shot. In addition there is further breakdown of moves so that you can pick and choose what you want to do.

HTH!

Thanks, Wendy, for all the great info! Oh my -- this one sounds tempting! I'll have to put it on my wish list! ;-)

Thank you Wendy, Jane and Leanne! This discussion answered a lot of the questions I had about kettlebells and what size to start with, so I didn't need to start another thread!

Thank you!

Clare

Hi Clare,

I think you'll really like them if you give them a try! I just posted something in the other KB thread about a good first DVD for you to get, but let me know if you'd like more recommendations!}(
