DH and the Doctor

We are trying to figure out if we are living in the stone ages. My DH went for a routine physical and lab work. $605 later we got a phone call from someone at the group (there are 6 physicians in the group) telling him that he needed to get these prescriptions filled and come back in for more lab work. (There was something questionable and needed further testing.) I got the scripts filled and brought them home. After we started reading the info that comes with the drugs, DH started questioning exactly why he was being given something for high blood pressure, when he did not have that. So, he called and started to ask some questions, and got transferred to a medical assistant who was unable to answer his questions. He asked if the Doc could call him back with some answers. The MA said why don't you come in tomorrow, he's got some time that he could talk to you...so he did. Now, we are looking at another $123 for that conversation. My question - is it too much to expect interpretation of the results, why was a phone call too much to ask for? Is this normal, or are we in a group that is just too busy for personal attention? This is dh's second visit to this Doc. Maybe his last. I would appreciate any input. Thank You.

I don't know why they would have your DH come in again. I would think that this is something that could be discussed over the phone unless the doctor had to do more testing.

My doctor usually calls with the results of the lab tests and lets me know what measures need to be taken. She has always called personally, so if I have questions I can address them right away. And she's never charged me for that or billed the insurance company.

I am just curious, what happened with the prescription? Did your DH in fact need medication for high blood pressure? Or was that a mistake?

I don't know what to tell you except that this doctor doesn't sound like someone I'd want to go back to.

Once the exam was done, the tests were run and the prescriptions were written out there was no reason why your DH should have had to go back in there to talk to the dr in person unless

A)your DH was diagnosed with a serious condition that they won't discuss over the phone

or

B)the doc just wanted an excuse to get more $$$ off of your DH.

If you ask me, it seems that B is what went on here.

Perhaps I am wrong. I hope I am but that's what it seems like to me.

I'd definately think twice before using this guy again!

Carola - The prescription was indeed a mistake. In fact the associate is the one who called it in. When my husband went in to question the meds, the Doc said that he did not actually look at the chart until DH called, and when he saw that the associate had prescribed blood pressure meds, he told him not to take anymore. Luckily, he had only taken one.

Wow!!! I am sure glad you guys read what was on the medication, many people don't even read it, just take it.

I don't even want to think about what could have happened if you guys weren't so attentive. That doc sounds like a real winner, what's that supposed to mean he "didn't look at the chart", he is supposed to look at the chart!!!!

I agree with Wendy, it sounds like they were only out to make money with the second appointment.

If I were you, I'd find another doctor!!! Good luck!

I'm in California and my doctor is a private practitioner but my OBGYN is part of a big medical group - and neither of them has ever treated me that way. I always get a phone call from the doctor. In fact when there was a suspicion on my mammogram, my OBGYN called me and spoke to me for a good 20 minutes advising me and making sure I really understood what she thought it was and how she would advise her mom or sister to move forward. She was right, by the way and it was nothing to worry about (*knocks on wood*)

I would find another doctor. There's no excuse for the way they treated your DH. And prescribing medication for no reason - that's down right scary! I don't take any medication unless I know exactly why it was prescribed and whether or not it's absolutely necessary or if there are alternatives I can try first.
