Deli Meat?

i have a question for all you ladies. I hope someone can help me out here. I think i'll be safe rather than sorry, but wanted to ask..i posted this in the checkin but realized it might not be seen and its not really check in related :)

I was reading that deli meat and hot dogs are not safe in pregnancies due to listeria and other bacteria.

i bought ham and cheese and turkey and cheese LUNCHABLES for our upcoming road trip to give the kids as snacks. Are these safe for me or should i not eat it? Also, is the cheese and crackers safe in the same package or are they contaminated?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Jen,
I have avoided cold deli meat this pregnancy because of listeria concerns. I do eat some Candadian bacon and prociutto still, but they are in things that are heated. I think that as long as you heat deli meat until it's steaming hot, then it's OK. That said, I'd be a bit wary of Lunchables. Could you just pack yourself some PB&J sandwiches and protein bars instead?

I ate deli meat and cheese through my entire pregnancy with no issue. I know the concern for listeria is with meat that is spoiled. I chose to eat everything - but this is a personal choice for everyone.

For me, I tend to err on the side of "millions of women have been doing this for years eating lunchmeat (or "x"...) and have been fine". But that's just me.
I took cold medicine and allergy medicine. I even had the occasional beer towards the end.

You have to choose what's right for you and what makes you feel safest for your pregnancy. The doctors do advise you to avoid lunchmeat...as well as most other things these days!

I eated all kinds of dely meats and hot dogs and I had a very healty baby... I just made shure they were in good conditions... just my 2 cents

Hey Jen - Kinda late but I talked to a RD at RT this weekend. She said that if we're eating the deli meat FROM THE COUNTER (as in they shave it in store same day) it's okay. It's the prepackaged stuff (Oscar Meyer Bologna comes to mind!) that the risk is elevated. If you want, pm me and I can get you in contact with her. She's another Catheite and just about the most brilliant foodie I know!

Thanks Kate! I was inquiring about the meat in lunchables which i guess isnt very safe after reading your post. I had bought some for our RT to VA last week with the kids in the car. Hopefully it isnt too damaging. I never eat that sort of thing, not even hotdogs.
If i do sandwiches its chicken wraps (which i hope is safe!) or pbj (rarely) or tunafish (rarely).
I do love cheese tho...is cheese safe?! LOL i never heard anything bad about cheese except the soft fancy types. I have singles wrapped up leftover from the kids, hopefully that is safe.
