Deep tissue massage

MAYNARDSMOM

Cathlete
I am planning on making an appointment for a massage this week. I have been feeling very tight in my back & shoulders, also my hamstrings. I have heard some of you mention of a deep tissue massage, is it just a more intense massage as the name suggests. Worth getting?

speaking of massages!

about 6/7 weeks ago, just after starting Cathe, I was rewarding myself for an entire week of doing daily 60+ minute workouts as my goal. When I went in to the office they asked me what sort of massage I wanted. Mind you, I have only had one other professional massage in my life, so really was nieve as to the intensity levels... I asked for a "sports and reflexology" massage, and HOLY COW BATMAN!!! I was sore for 3 days afterwards and could barely move my neck and shoulders... The guy must have thought I was a 300 lb. linebacker... It killed me during the hour, but I didn't know it wasn't supposed to hurt, so I endured it! Only once did I say "ouch, that's too hard"

I went again last week at the hotel I was out while out of town, and had a discussion with the gal about my previous experience and she said that I should have opened my mouth! Duh! this experience was SO much better and felt great! she also told me that I had very thight shoulders and neck... that's where I carry much of my tension, so will try other stretches to avoid so much...

My suggestion: if it HURTS, it's TOO HARD! Deep tissue or not... and drink LOTS of water after or you will be stiff and sore the next day no matter how light or hard your treatment is. When it is done right it feels SO good!

The gal I usually go to just a great job, not to light that I feel like I'm wasting my money buthard enough that it feels good. Onlyonce do I remember her workingout a know & there were points when it hurt!! I was tender after that & will remember in the future to speak up. One I really liked was the hot rocks!!! Those were great! :)

Tami - My PT did some very localized deep tissue massage in my hamstring when I was rehabbing from surgery. Yes, it's very intense and not what you'd called relaxing or comfortable, but it was helpful. It's usually used for chronically tense muscles.

I'd never have it done as a whole body massage...its not meant for that!!:eek:

I'd ask you massage therapist to give it a try in an area where your particularly tight and see how it goes...you can always have her back off if it's too much.
