Darn Sciatic Nerve Is Bugging Bad! Help!

Tiffany(tneah)

Okay, so I had a hip replacement last July. Not supposed to jog....but yeah, Grace "made me try it" and now I have pinpointed the cause of my sciatic nerve issue..jogging. But I do not want to stop. But boy, this nerve pain is unrelenting you guys, I cannot lay on the sofa at night or ride in the car without contorting in pain for heavens sake.

Emily, anyone??? Suggestions on what the heck to do? I am not near my regular chiroprator so I cannot get adjusted which always helps. I do the stretches like mad too, so I know I am stretched out. Is this just a "new thing" because I have not jogged in years??? Thanks guys, its bothering me really bad.

Ah, Tneah! Stop that running!!! It's just not worth it. I remember last year when Emily had sciatic nerve issues - she had to totally stop running for .... months, I think. I mean, a long time!

I know it's fun. I miss running too. I quit because I was starting to have knee issues and decided that keeping my knees was more important - and that's when I found step aerobics, by the way!

But Tneah, don't hurt yourself anymore! Remember exactly why you ended up having that hip replacement, will ya? :p

Tiffany,
Sorry to hear about your sciatic issues, it's a real *%#! isn't it?!
I have to say I agree about not running. If that seems to be the trigger, you should probably stop. :(
I find it interesting that you have hip and sciatic issues b/c once my chiropractor got my hips and tailbone properly aligned, my sciatica went away.
I wish you were near your chiro so you could find relief from the unrelenting pain, burning, and tingling!
Take care of yourself and good luck!

Tiffany~
I agree with Shannon. If jogging is the trigger, you need to stop. At least until your can see your chiro. I know what a bummer it is to have to stop doing something you love because your body is rebelling. I'm dealing with bursitis in my knee and have to bag the cardio for awhile:(

My MIL was having very bad sciatic nerve pain and she got a cortisone shot in her hip and also a epidural. She's been pain free for awhile now. Not sure if that is an option for you but I just thought I would throw it out there.

Take care and I hope you get some relief soon.

Oh Tiffany, I feel your pain! Yes, stop running. At least for now. You may be able to run again but you need to address the underlying problem first. I had to lay off running for a ridiculously long time (like 9 months). And even now, I don't run more than twice a week. It is totally possible to overcome this, but it's a stubborn and persistant injury and it takes time.

The chiropractor will help immensely, so go see him the first chance you get. Massage therapy helps too, but can get expensive fast.

Am I correct in assuming that the cause of your sciatic pain is muscular? If so, you may want to check this out:

You don't necessarily need the TP Massage ball (a tennis ball will do), but these are the techniques you should use to release the muscles. It'll hurt like mad at first, but it works.

I've also heard that Classical Stretch helps too. I just got the DVD myself, and haven't had a chance to try it, but I'll let you know what I think. :)

I'm sorry you have to deal with this - it's literally a pain in the butt. But it can be overcome! Hang in there!

Thanks you guys, Shannon, you are right of course, I guess I got so excited because after all these years, I was running! Not alot, I would just do the sprints on the itrains at a joggers pace, and jog every other 5 minutes, but obviously, this is even too much.

Thank goodness for Coach Sean and CC right Shannon??;) I guess walking and the elliptical are where its at for me right now. Even the bike kills, cause I am sitting on my bum, right where that nerve is.

Oh, and you just reminded me - sitting is like the worst thing you can do for it. If at all possible, avoid sitting. Easier said than done, I know. And if you do have to sit, make sure you have a nice cushion under you to keep pressure off the nerve.

Tneah - yep, CC and the elliptical are lifesavers! I'm glad you decided to lay off on the running. Whew. :D

Hey Tneah,

Just wanted to say that I'm glad you decided to lay off the running since it seemed to really exacerbate your pain! Sending you {{{HUGS}}}!! Now go get a nice massage to make your hip feel better! ;)

Thanks chica's. Emily, that looks interesting, I was all ready to order until I saw the price for crying out loud, but will get a tennis ball and go to town on that area. The foam roller works too, but mine is in Vegas, maybe I should get another one.

Crap, why can't the body follow the mind all the time and not hurt? :p

I know! Sitting in the car is the WORST. Even lying on the couch last night bugged it...icky stuff.

tneah-i don't have any advice, except that I feel your pain (I am 5 months pregnant and I am just beginning to "enjoy" sciaticia:mad:). Someone told me to try epsom salts in a hot bath for 20 min then a complete lower body stretch. I haven't tried it, because I can't seem to stay up late enough to get in the tub, but maybe it would help. If nothing else, sending pain free thoughts your way!
