I, too, am guilty of 'planticide.' A friend gave me a potted plant for my birthday, and it's looking rather sickly.

Robin, I do know what you mean about not wanting to toss out a still-living plant. But a few nights near a cold window, or maybe even putting it out on the porch for a few days, will take care of it!

I just can't bring myself to do that. Half of them died a natural death, but the three remaining seem to be indestructable. Once the weather moderates, I guess I'll put them on the back patio and let them fend for themselves.

When I was in college, my mother's boss back then always gave her a poinsetta at Christmas. She hates poinsettas, but every year, that's what she got.

One holiday, I came home from college for Xmas break, saw this pathetic looking poinsetta on the dining room buffet, and decided to water it. My mom came up the stairs just as I was giving the plant the water is desperately needed. She yelled, "What are you *DOING*? I've been trying to kill that damn plant for three weeks now!"

We had a good laugh about that.

Robin, I know how you can get rid of the plant guilt free -- poinsettias CAN make kitties sick. Your kitty will thank you. OTOH, my kitty has nibbled on them and has never gotten sick form it. Never mind, I guess I'm not much help.

OR, you could always take it to work and leave it for a patient that doesn't have many visitors or flowers.

My mom had a poinsettia that lived for almost 10 years! It would get red brachts at totally random times too - sometimes in the summer, sometimes in the winter, whenver it felt like it.

If you keep taking care of it, it will hang around a loooong time. :)
