LOL that would be embarrassing if he made a 0 and he said .. WELL MY AUNT helped me .. :eek: :eek: :p:p awwww lawwwd ... so needless to say .. by the time i ran errands for DH .. then got home ... went over his math that he did earlier that he TOTALLY FLUBBED on .. then started supper .. then sat down and worked w/him on how to work the math .. CRAP .. the night was gone!! So glad I got my run in at lunch ... :confused: .. guess I will run again today .. jic I dont get time to workout this afternoon - his parents are coming home today .. but I think they will be LATE tonight when they get in ..soooooooooo .. :confused:.. homework duty will be mine {{ insert crying fit }}

Laura's post about spending 2 hours helping her DN with his homework got me thinking...When I was in school I rarely got help from my parents with homework and if I did it was brief! IMO helping them beyond perhaps clarifying instructions or showing them once how to do something if they don't understand is more hurtful then beneficial. If a child gets too much help at home which results in handing in homework that is 100% correct (only b/c they got help), then the teacher is not going to realize that this child didn't fully understand the homework and if they don't know this then there is no way for them to help that child! I rarely help my DS with his homework. I will do what I said...clarifying instructions...doing something once as an example for him...but after that he needs to do it on his own. He needs to hand in homework that is an actual representation of what he has learned, understands or does NOT understand b/c otherwise why bother???

Laura, please understand I am not criticizing you in any way for helping your DN. It was great of you to spend so much time with him and you did what you needed to do, I am sure due to what his parents do and to each his own with how they raise their kids cause trust me I am the most imperfect parent there is I think! I just always thought about this and having you talk about spending all that time on homework made me think of it again!

Any thoughts? Am I way of base here?? Maybe I am? IDK!!!

WEndy .. OH NO I DIDNT DO IT FOR HIM .. but made him work it out .. on paper .. I made him think .. (he is struggling in math) ...and if he was wrong .. I let it be wrong .... he is in fourth grade .. think you will change your mind when you get to that grade and up .. divisions and fractions are tuff when they first start learning it .. it is like he couldnt get past the fact the numbers were so large he was working with ... so I made him break it down to where the numbers werent so daunting to him .. math is kinda like .. you dont get it till one day it 'clicks' and you get it .. but I in NO way gave him the answers nor did it for him ..... on spelling words .. all I did is go over them ...kinda like a spelling bee thing .. call them out and he spells them out loud .. etc ... if he mispelled one . I would correct him .. move on and come back to it later .. etc ..

NO I dont think parents should do the homework for them .. but I dont think they should leave it up to the child .. something a parent might say might actually click in the childs head in a different way ...

some people are analytic .. some are more lyrical and free .. some people are precise while others fly by the seat of the pants ... and if left up to a kid .. well guess what they are gonna choose ... ???? the easiest route .. right or wrong ... if they are not taught to think then they wont .. and it is not all up to the teachers .. that is just IN MY opinion that is ...

I am not a parent .. but my parents helped me .. that was mainly on math and harder subjects .. when older I was left to do on my own .. but they still checked my work ... I would spend HOURS doing homework .. to some it comes easy .. to others they have to work at it .. and it must have done good b/c when enterinig middle school ... I tested one grade level ahead of the others in my class .. soooooooo ... I actually could have skipped a grade .. and that was no coincidence .. it was b/c I worked hard on homework and my parents took time to help me ... I think .. but .. you are right .. to each his own .. and I by no means think that the parents shoudl DO the homework or school projects ..but should lend guidance! just my opinion anyways!

Laura,

Okay I completely agree with you! Maybe that's what most parents are doing-what you did with your DN but it never sounds like it. It always sounds like the parent is doing the work FOR the child and THAT is what I do not agree with. My son is doing very well in school. Thankfully most things are coming very easy for him. He's a smarty pants...like his DAD!:p If there comes a time where he DOES need help, it will probably be DAD's job to help him cause MOM probably won't be able to figure it out for herself much less help him! LOL Anyway, thanks for responding! :)

Hi ladies,

The boot is gone and I'm in a very loosened up tennis shoe....and trying to walk. My foot is still swollen but it will subside over the next several months. It is also very tender and sore but I have been released for all activities as my mobility increases. The Dr. said to slowly increase my cardio activity, stepping and high impact being last. Woo Hoo!!! One thing I'm not happy about is the Dr. said I may not get full mobility back in that joint....wearing heels may never happen. I'm going to do my physical therapy and hope for the best. She also said that they can remove the screws in 6 mos. or so if they bother me. That would be another surgery ....not sure I'm up for that.

Homework....the whole reason why after work workouts never worked for me. From personal experience, you cannot leave your childs understanding of homework to the teacher. Teachers do not have time to cater to each student. My middle son had an English Teacher teaching math that she didnt know. She did not know the order of operations and was teaching them wrong. I had to schedule a meeting with the teacher and the principal....all this after my son told me he was going to get every problem wrong because he thought I was wrong. He was in middle school when this happened and has been behind in math ever since. He even had to go to summer school for math after HS graduation and before starting college. Obviously I do not think parents should do the childs homework, but making sure they understand how to do what is asked will only benefit the child. Just my opinion.

Laura-being a parent is hard and very time consuming! I don't necessarily think crossfit is any more dangerous than stepping. These things just happen sometimes. Hope your friend is okay, being injured sucks! Congrats on your winnings...and buying something for yourself with it! Saving up for the next casino trip is a good idea too!

Wendy-Nice workout this morning, I didn't do anything. I went to bed late and was too tired to get moving this morning. The plan for tomorrow is KPC. I've been missing my cardio and am looking forward to get back to it.

Just a few more thoughts on the homework thing and then I promise I will shut up! LOL

I graduated 20 years ago from a way of schooling that is very different from what there is today. I didn't need much help but teachers were available to help you if needed them. Today I hear parents complain that teachers just plain and simple choose not to make themselves available to their students and that's sad. If you are not willing to give a little extra time to help a struggling student then don't be a teacher because I am sorry but that's part of the job! Ofcourse there is a limit but I think all teachers should have SOME before and/or afterschool help available for their students if they need it. I also hear that the curriculum is outrageous today. The things they are teaching kids in grade school things that I didn't learn until several years later! Ofcourse these kids are going to have a tough time of it! As a parent I am ofcourse willing to help my child but from the stories I have heard over the years it just sounds like the teachers are putting more and more on the parents and taking less and less responsibility for themselves as far as teaching our kids go. If I wanted the bulk of the responsibility for teaching my son or thought I could do a better job of it then I would be homeschooling him! If I were intersted in teaching, I'd be a teacher myself! I can help, yes, but as a non-teacher who is probably going to be more and more unfamiliar with what he is learning as time goes on, how in the heck can I be expected to properly help him all of the time?! Laura- you said it yourself that you were questioning wether YOU were doing DN's problems right! We shouldn't have to worry about this! My son is only in 1st grade and so far doing very well so I can't speak from personal experience but I have heard horror stories time and time again and it scares the crap out of me! :( Seriously! Diana-what you said about the teacher who was teaching your son WRONG!? That's just insane! There is no excuse for that!

Ok, I feel better now. Back to our regularly scheduled schmoozing! LOL ;)

Diana:: Well you have to take it slow which may be frustrating but atleast you are able to start easing into more activities! Sounds like the LIS/STS roation will be perfect for you! :) Just what the dr ordered! ;):p LOL Ooh KPC is a great idea. Easy to modify to low impact and if you punch and kick as hard as can wearing weighted gloves you will burn calories like crazy w/o your feet ever leaving the floor! ;)

RUN DONE!!

Wendy - ITA with the sad state of schools .. My DN had a teacher than was TOTALLY USELESS ... 2nd grade and was FAILING reading.. he only made it by having tutors (by my urging b/c consultations w/the idiot teacher was like talking to a dumb blonde bimbo - who basically told them it was up to THEM she coudlnt help:mad:) .. next year .. new teacher - straight A's in reading and comprehension ... it was not the kid failing it was the TEACHER FAILING ... and that is just unexcusable IMO .. but unfortunely it happens every year .. in probably every school .. schools are full of bureaucracy ... and teachers have more and more cut backs and larger classrooms and less money and supplies .. more rigid cirruculum and test but nothing to aid them in the classroom to prepare for it ...even my teacher friends say the way the states insist you teach now is LESS effective and the kids are NOT getting it .... the state testing is worse .. it is a SAD state - some of my best friends are teachers and couselors and OMG the HORROR stories they tell me .. it scares the H### outta me for my DN .. it is just sad .. it is nothing like when we were in school ...

DI - tell me again WTH kind of surgery you had .. this seems more than I was expecting it to be for you .. WOW .. poor thing .. BUT AT LEAST WOOT WOOT .. the boot is gone .. that is progress!!! so if you do loose mobility in the joint .. what does that mean for impact stuff .. like plyos, stepping, running ???? gosh it hurts me to think about it!! I was thinking once the boot came off you would be good to go basically - yikes - I havent heard from my friend .. keeping my fingers crossed she just sprained it and didnt rupture or tear it!!!! ITA w/everythign you said about homework - my friend had a son that went just about thru the same thing as your son .. she had to hire tutors and once he got behind b/c of an ingnorant teacher he STAYED behind ... till he left the school ... SAD!!!!!!

and yes .. I can see very well why moms get up early to fit that workout in - it is one of those HAVE TO or it wont get done things!!!!

Well 4 1/2 miles run at lunch- DONE .. yes ... was nice out but a bit hotter than ystdy - I got a bit sweaty .. eeeewwwwwwww .. but I have my makeup and body touch up kit here at work for moments just like this!! :p

Wendy-We actually moved our son to a different school over the English teacher teaching math incorrectly. Once she realized she was wrong, she said to my son in our parent/teacher/student meeting "If you'll allow me to learn along with you" I had an out of body experience...and these not so nice words flew outta my mouth. I basically said you should not be teaching material that you don't know. My other son was waiting in the hallway...when we came he emphatically said...You sure told her!

KPC is a favorite of my....the reward for going through the first half...is the combo's in the second half....my favorite!

Laura-I had a toe osteotomy with soft tissue release. They broke a bone and realigned my big toe and screwed the bones together. They also did another incision on the top of my foot between my big toe and second toe for the soft tissue release. All this was due to a recurring bunion that was so painful it was preventing me from living my life. I wish I would've known my current foot Dr. when I had the first surgery done, the others probably wouldn't have been necessary. Some of the flexibility/mobility will come back over time. What I can't do is roll up on the ball of my foot...yet. My big toe doesn't bend back...or towards me and it is quite painful when I manipulate it. After my previous surgery, I had this crazy contraption I put on at night to hold my to up as long possible seconds....to minutes as the mobility increased. This dr. didn't give me one of those thingies.

Do either of you know if baby Blue has a name??

Morning.

No work out for me. I think I'm coming down with something. UGH. DS wasn't feeling well over the weekend so DH took him Monday night to the doctor. He's on antibiotics now but I think it's too late. :( I don't feel awful and am not running a fever but I'm DEFINITELY not 100% so in an effort to NOT blow it this weekend by not being well enough to start the new rotation, I will be resting from today until I feel better...or Saturday.... Whichever comes first....Fingers crossed!

Diana:: I don't blame you for pulling your son out of that school since you had the opportunity. I hope the new school had better teachers!

Hi Ladies,

I attempted my first cardio workout this morning...KPC...and it wasn't pretty. I did the best I could but ended up skipping the last combo at the end since it was too high impact for me. Hopefully my balance will improve once the pain is gone and my workouts will improve to. Tomorrow I plan on doing legs, but haven't chosen which workout.

Wendy-Feel better soon. Glad you are resting and fighting off this bug so you can start the rotation on Saturday!:D

Laura-what do you have on tap for today?

Hi Girls-

Judging by the way I felt for a while this morning there was NO WAY I was working out! I woke up and felt icky but within 30 mins I felt AWFUL! I took advil and it helped a lot. I hope it continues to help!!!

So this morning was a big fubar! Despite how I felt I was going to come into work since I had no fever and figured if I really felt awful I could leave early so off DS and I go to get him to school and me to work. Well, the district has a late start (9am) every wednesday but DS' beforecare is open so I've never had any issues. This morning I roll up and am told that I am too late. He can't be admitted into beforecare on Wednesdays after 7:30am for whatever reason. I said but he was always able in the past and I was told it's a new rule that went into affect a couple weeks ago for whatever reason. Funny-with the exception of just the last 2 days, I have not even been leaving MY HOUSE until AFTER 7:30 and he has been able to get into beforecare but whatever...now I'm stuck going back home with him until 9am. I called my boss and took a 1/2 day b/c if not, I would have had to make up my missed time this morning and that can be more of a PITA to make happen then it's worth. Just aggravating, you know?

The only GOOD thing about it is that in order to keep moving and make sure I would actually GET TO WORK, I decided to cook tonight's dinner while I was home. I made something called Turkey Tamale Potpie. Kind of a pain in the neck but I think it's going to be really yummy! Can't wait to get home for dinner now!:D

Diana:: Sorry KPC didn't work out as well as you intended this morning but now atleast you know. Yeah-now that I am getting myself re-excited for this rotation I really don't want to be sick and be forced to delay starting it! I also have a hair appointment sat morning AND a date with DH that night b/c my mom offered to take DS for an overnight since she hasn't had him in a while. If I am sick it will ruin everything!:(:(

Good Morning.

No work out again for me. :( Not really feeling better but no worse either so not sure what's in store for Saturday. If I am not well enough to start the rotation on Saturday then I will wait a week. Saturday start is what will work out the best for me so I am just going to wait until I can do it that way. Fingers crossed this weekend works out though!

BBL!

Good Morning,

I'm not working out either...booh. I'm coming home from work early so legs could get done this afternoon or eveneing. I wore a shoe yesterday that I probably shouldn't have, I could barely walk when I got home. Back to tennis shoes for few more days. Also, my left leg has been hurting and the dr. said its from carrying the brunt of my weight for so long but should subside soon.

I've been on a cooking kick lately...probably because Wendy keeps posting all these delicious recipes. I made the Sante Fe Chicken from the skinnytaste site and it was a hit at my house.

One of DS's football coaches is working with him regarding his diet and will be calling us next week. DS is a big boy and carries some extra "fat" weight. His coach told him that his bad diet is undoing all the good his workouts are doing. I'm glad this information is coming from one of his coaches, someone he looks up to and will listen to. DH and I telling him he needs to clean up is diet doesn't do any good. I don't buy pop, but DS buys his own mountain dew...he is a mountain dew addict-disgusting.

Wendy-sorry about the daycare mishap...I don't miss those days. IMO, if you are there before school starts it should be fine, whether it's an hour or just 5 minutes. Sending healthy vibes your way...I know you don't want to miss your date and I don't want to miss my w/o partner starting the rotation on time!;)

Laura-back to reality for you it sounds.:D Oh my goodness, so sorry about your friend. I hear achilles tendons take a long time to heal...hope I'm wrong. I really wish my Dr. would've given me that contraption thingy but I'm going to see if DS can make something that would do the same thing. It really helped me.

Have a great day ladies!

Diana:: Yeowch, sorry about your foot. It's trial and error regarding what shoes are ok when I am sure. Hope you are feeling better today. Since you are planning to work lower body later on I have to figure your foot isn't as painful as it was last night. IDK if I should say sorry for posting those recipes or you're welcome! LOL :p The Santa Fe Chicken is awesome! I agree! That was suggested to me by another Cathlete when I made it a while back. Yeah-why would DS listen to his mom and dad? They don't know anything! Well atleast there is SOMEONE who he will listen to so hopefully his diet will begin to improve now. It's gotta be tough. I still have alot of control over my son's diet because he is so young still but as he gets older I know I will lose it. I just hope he remembers what I've tried to teach him so far as he gets older. Good luck, with that one, right?:p LOL So I am HOPING I will be okay for Saturday! I don't want to have to delay it so we'll see!!!
