cutting calories

I have been using the sparkpeople website to keep track of calorie consumption as well as calories burned from exercise. It has me eating between 1200-1600 calories. The thing is I have been staying around the 1600 level and even then sometimes feel hungry still. I am burning more calories as far as exercise that they suggest I burn each day. so my question is , is it okay if I eat more since I am burning more than they recommend. Will the weight still go down? so far, last time i weighed myself I have gone down a pd in a half and I have only been at this a week so far.

Laura~
I am not sure of the answer, but I have had the opposite effect this week. I have the same calorie recommendation from sparkpeople, and I have burned way more exercise calories than recommended also. I have eaten a different # of calories every day, and have felt pretty full. I have lost several pounds, too! Don't you just love sparkpeople? I am so glad someone here found it!

What kinds of calories are you consuming? Maybe that has something to do with it?

Congrats on the pounds off!!

Hi Laura. Your calorie intake sounds kind of low if you're working out a la Cathe. I would think 1800 should be a start point for you. Add maybe another clean snack in and I think you will be fine. Remember, you need to the fuel to properly feed your muscles and ultimately lose weight/burn fat! HTH!

Try eating more stuff that will keep you fuller longer like really big salads. This you may have to play around with. Oatmeal is also a good feel-full food. Eat more often, too - this helps.
Just Do It! :)

I had entered my info into sparkpeople and was told the same basic calorie range...something like 1220-1550 cals per week.

Now I zig-zag using a different formula to calculate cals and that one says my MINIMUM cal intake should be just over 1500 to create a 30% deficit in my diet and that can leave me feeling hungry so often times I need to bump it up a bit. This formula takes into consideration my age, weight, height and activity level.

I would say that possibly sparkpeople is giving you a lower # than they should. I'd see what your comfortable cal intake is WITHOUT being left hungry and stick with that.

some days I feel satisfied at the 1600 and some days I dont. I sometimes feel so hungry. Like after my bootcamp class lastnight. It burns around 600calories. I definately wouldnt be able to function on less than 1500 or so. I figure it will take me a few weeks to get my eating adjusted since I was eating way over 2000calories before. I definately dont feel as bloated and dont have that heavy feeling you get when you do pig out all day. I am hoping things will level out for me. How long has anyone else been using sparkpeople? I like it because before I was writing what i was eating down and now I just pop it in the computer and it figures everything for me.

i just signed up for spark as well and i'm in just about the same range as you also. that sounds about right to me, but i'll let you know if i start feeling hungry with that amount (i just started sparkpeople a few hours ago).

alot of my problem is that I need to stop eating. I have a bad habit of just eating even when I am not hungry. I am trying to work on this but it gets the best of me most days. I will keep trying though. I figure I wont get it right in the first week after eating like a pig for months on end.

Laura -

Do you have a good idea of how many calories you burn in a week? From your start page if you click on "Change My Diet Goals", then scroll through to page three, I believe - the one that says activity level - enter that number in.

They had me doing something like 2500 calories a week. I burn twice that (I use a HRM). When I changed that number, they upped my calories a bit.

I also do a kind of stagger. I eat right in my range most days, but on Wed and Sat I eat 300/400 calories more. It seems to be working well.

Just FYI - I am 5'10 and have a bigger frame, but I get 1700-2000 calories a day.

they suggested I burn 1530calories a week and I almost double that last week, not quite 3000calories in five days.I dont know but this morning the scale was up even more than it was before. It may be mother nature . I am hop;ing that is why because even with eating more 3days out of the six I burned way more calories than they said. I just need to keep trying, eventually I will beat my stomach out. hop;efully anyway.

Good luck, Laura! I always gain weight when I first start to eat better. My body goes into revolt. I'm finally starting to drop now. It took 2 weeks.

thanks, I will uping my running here in the next month or so which usually helps bring my weight down. I havent been running much in the last few months, I think that is why I have gained. But I will training for my 1/2marathon starting at the end of february so I usually notice a good 5lb drop when I run more regular. But i definately need to work on my eating habits. thanks for your suggestions.
