crunches

I was on another message board and found a post where they were challenging each other to do 100 crunches a day. Someone chimmed in and said that if you can do 100 crunches you are doing them incorrectly. Several people responded and said that they were not doing them consecutively, but throughout the day. I dropped to the floor & kicked out 150 crunches. Am I doing them wrong? Just curious why someone would say that.

Hmmm, okay. First off, there is no reason to do crunches every single day. Your abs need rest like all of your other muscle groups. When you do train them, 1-2 days a week, train hard. However, I personally think it's not about quantity, it's quality. You don't have to bang out 100 crunches to get a good ab workout. I do think maybe there is some truth if you are really concentrating on the muscle you would fatigue before 100. Mixing up different types of ab exercising, you could surely do 100 if not more. I think one repetitive type would surely fatigue that one area. So this is my two cents ;)

I agree that you do not need to work your abs every day & that quality is better than quantity. I was surprised by what I was reading on that site. I have done Core max 1,2 & 3 consecutively (I couldn't do all of the jack knives). My abs were fatigued, but I pushed through it. When I work abs without a dvd, I usually select 3 or 4 different exercies and do them until I can't. Is it not necessary to go until you can't do 1 more? I've always worked my abs harder than any other muscle group.

I think it's great to push to the point of muscle fatigue w/ different exercises like you do. I don't think doing all 3 coremax's is beneficial, though. That's a really long time and not necessary. Doing 1 segment will give your abs a really hard workout. I don't think I'd recommend doing more than 30 min of ab work. It's just too much IMO.
