Crunches

I don't know if you can answer this but I'm gonna give it a try. I have a condition called cranial dystonia. I started to get botox injections in the front of my throat 2 months ago, meaning I have lost some muscle control in the front of my neck. When I lay down on my back and try to do a sit-up with my arms out, my head falls backwards. I use my abs but I am now having a harder time with sit-ups. If I don't support my head well, then my head goes back and the front gets sore. My question is, do I want to go ahead and let it get sore to help build up some new muscles in my neck or am I left with just doing basic crunches? When you do them with the ball in your hands, I am having a hard time with that. I have to modify. If I just do the basic, will I still get the same effect from them?

YOu could support your head with a towel. Lie on a towel, about 1 foot down from the top. Grab the corners of the towel (up behind your head), and when you crunch up, you can let your head lie back in the towel while you pull up with your hands (not changing their positin relative to your upper body).

Hey, thanks. I tried it and it does a lot to support my head up. I am then able to take my hands out and make it more difficult. I really appreciate the thought. I also tried it with the ball and can still hold the ball over my head and lift. I really like to push my abs. and I started to think that I was so limited. It never even crossed my mind of using a towel. Thanks again.

Hi Bwest! Nice to hear from you:)

While I have heard of cranial dystonia, I'm unfortunately not qualified to answer your question. Please ask your doctor this question. Let them know how much you enjoy working out (if you haven't already) and tell them about the specific exercises that you have questions about. Since they know your entire medical history they will be able to give you the necessary and specific advice you are looking for. Sorry I could not be of more help to you. Take Care!
