As a klutzy veteran of numerous broken toes--five, to be exact--I can tell you this: you can waste your time getting it x-rayed, but if it's not crooked (or if it is and you cannot get starighten it out yourself), just ice it,rest it, etc. All doctor would do is tape it to its neighbor, and you can do that yourself.
I have never broken my big toe, thankfully, but have broken baby toes three times, and the next one in twice (I have rotated feet, so it's worked out nicely).
I had my first few x-rayed, then learned to tell when it was broken: turns hideous colors pretty quickly, expecially underneath; lovely red lines streaimg from the broken area; hurts like a m&*^%$, but the pain doesn't subside like with a plain old stubbing, etc.
They can take a nice long while to heal, and some hurt more than others. I usually had to avoid high impact and step for a few days or more, but extra taping when exercising--wrapping the entire front of your foot-- will help to immobilize it and minimize pain. Lunges tended to hurt the most actually, but moreso with the bigger toes.
You shouldn't be out of commission too long.
Good luck,
Michele
