Cripes - I broke my toe!

What do I do now?

I rammed my baby toe against the dresser a couple hours ago. I put ice on it for a little bit, but now it's black and blue and hurting.
How long will it take to heal?

Can you exercise with a broken toe?

Thanks for your answers/advice!

I have no idea, but I feel for you. I just stubbed mine this morning, and it sent a few vile words out of my mouth. Hurt like hell. Hope you get better soon.

Hopefull;(

How do you know it's actually broken? I've slammed my toe against things (like a 20# dumbbell that I left out :-( ) and it was black and blue and sore, but I didn't know if it was broken (and assumed it wasn't). I don't remember how long it took to get 100% better, but I did work out with it as it was. I didn't do any impact, and I avoided any weight work that put stress on it. At least for the first 2-3 days, avoid lower body weights (floor work would be o.k., and upper body weights would be fine) and don't do step or other impact cardio.

As a klutzy veteran of numerous broken toes--five, to be exact--I can tell you this: you can waste your time getting it x-rayed, but if it's not crooked (or if it is and you cannot get starighten it out yourself), just ice it,rest it, etc. All doctor would do is tape it to its neighbor, and you can do that yourself.

I have never broken my big toe, thankfully, but have broken baby toes three times, and the next one in twice (I have rotated feet, so it's worked out nicely).

I had my first few x-rayed, then learned to tell when it was broken: turns hideous colors pretty quickly, expecially underneath; lovely red lines streaimg from the broken area; hurts like a m&*^%$, but the pain doesn't subside like with a plain old stubbing, etc.

They can take a nice long while to heal, and some hurt more than others. I usually had to avoid high impact and step for a few days or more, but extra taping when exercising--wrapping the entire front of your foot-- will help to immobilize it and minimize pain. Lunges tended to hurt the most actually, but moreso with the bigger toes.

You shouldn't be out of commission too long.
Good luck,
Michele

Michele -

Thanks for the tips - I took today off because the pain just got worse throughout the day, even though I iced and buddy taped the toe.

I was also worried that trying to shove it into a shoe would just make it worse.

I'm pretty sure it's broken because like you said - it's fifteen different shades of red, blue, and purple, and when I was massaging it after I stubbed it, it 'snapped' like a knuckle on my hand - eeeewww.

Anyway, thanks again for your advice!

Ouch!x(

Definitely sounds broken to me. I've broken three, mostly because of being too much in a hurry and not wearing shoes:+

The first wee is the worst. Mine usually took about 6 weeks to be back to normal. I had to baby them for at least 3 weeks after the injury. I did not go to the doctor either.

Good luck!

Candi -

You said yours took about 6 weeks to get back to normal, but when were you able to resume your regular workout routine?

When you said it snapped like a knuckle i Cringed out loud!!! lol ... nasty!!! lol ... hope you get better soon.

W x Healing hugs to your toe!

It was about three weeks before I could resume real Cathe type cardio. I owned a stairclimber at the time so I used that until I felt comfortable in my shoes again...about three weeks later. Actually, as I recall, it took about that long before all the bruising was gone.

So sorry. Such an inconvenience, I know!
