could there be a problem?

My sister in-law just had a baby boy. The baby had a fever when it was born, but it went down. The pediatrician came in and examined the baby. She said his heart and stomach sounded fine. The mother was worried because it hadn't use the bathroom either way. The pediatrician said give it 24 hours. Ijust hope she isn't worrying too much. I figured some of you mothers of before would feel this is normal.

Maybe I'm trying to put my own mind at ease.

Hi Kim! It is acceptable to give a new baby 24 hours after birth for the first void (urine) and stool. I have a couple of current Maternity Nursing book here at my desk and it supports this. In fact, one states that only about 69% of newborns pass meconium (baby's first stools) within 12 hours, 94% by 24 hours, and 99.8% in 48 hours. As for the fever, I am sure the baby is being monitored.

HTH!! Congrats to your family!!!!!

Thanks Autumn, that makes me feel so much better. She said she was feeling paranoid, and I told her that she is just being a mother.

Thanks for your answers. I really puts my mind to ease.

You are welcome! Yes, she is just being a mother, and there is nothing wrong with questioning the care of our loved ones esepcially our children. :)
