Cortisone shots...

i am going to the orthopedic surgeon today and might have to get a cortisone shot in my hip. has anyone had one and just how painful is it? someone told me the needle is HUGE and it HURTS! i'm a total wimp when it comes to pain!

Don't worry, there's only a little pinch. It only hurts if you tense up your muscles. I get them every 6 weeks or so, (nerve blocks in my lower back).

Good luck:)

I had one in my SI joint (lower back/hip area) a couple weeks ago. It hurts a bit, but it's not horrible. (Doesn't compare to labor, for example) They spray some numbing type stuff on first. I've been pain-free ever since, so what's a couple seconds on unpleasantness??

I had 2 of them in my heel for PF. My podiatrist numbed the area and I didn't feel it at all. I have to say the numbing helped more than the shot for me. The cortisone did nothing for me.

well, i am glad to hear they numb you. i am also glad to hear that the predominant opinion is that for hip pain, they work. we'll see what the doc says and if i have to get one.

I think it kind of depends on the person. I had one in my elbow once. The shot didn't hurt, but for a few hours afterward, my symptoms were a lot worse. Then they went back to normal, and the shot didn't really seem to help at all. But this was for a nerve problem, which is different than what cortisone seems to usually be used for.

I got one once in my hip, but it was for a reaction to a bee bite! My face got all swelled up from the bite and I guess cortisone was the Doctor's answer. The shot was not bad at all. The swelling went down and I did enjoy my body pain free for about a month as an added benefit!

I had an injection for my frozen shoulder. It hurt a bit, since they inject it right into the muscle, but no biggy.

I DID have breakthrough bleeding about a week later, which scared the beJesus out of me, since no one had told me that could be a possibilty. It wasn't until I went to my gyno in a panic (and for a biopsy) that we got to the cause. She was the one who told me. I mentioned it to an orthopaedic surgeon later, and he said that they always seem to forget to tell women that.x(

Good luck!

I recently got costison shots in my shoulder and he spray-numbed it first, and gave me the shot, and it was no problem at all.

Why are you getting a shot in your hip ??

As someone mentioned, I think it depends on one's pain tolerance, and I also think it really depends on the body part! I had one in my IT Band/knee and it just about sent me through the roof when it went in. The hip one didn't hurt near as much going in. I suppose because I have more fat there, LOL. *But* it did hurt very badly for 12 hours after. I was thinking I had made a serious mistake in getting it. After 24 hours it felt great, though. Mine (bursitis) is starting to flare up again, so I'm going in for another ultrasound-guided injection in a few weeks.

Good luck!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i had to get TWO, both right at the bone. the shot going in did not hurt at all, but OMG, the medicine going in burned!!! the site is sore right now. i actually have two issues" bursitis in two areas of the side of my hip AND piriformis syndrome (for which he prescribed physical therapy).

the worst part, i can't do any cardio (not even the elliptical) for at least four days. he said the cortisone can mask pain and he wants to know if it continues to hurt because then we need to go forward with an MRI. he did not see any evidence of a stress fracture in my hip on the x-ray or upon examination, but if it still hurts with the shots, he wants to be able to rule it out 100%.

of course the reason for my injuries are "overuse!" no, not me!

Ugh~ sounds *exactly* like mine. I had the MRI before he would even do the injection. I've been in PT since November. While I initially blew it off (one of the first things the PT had me doing was balancing on one leg, DUH!), I do think it is helping now that I've moved beyond those first weeks. I did zero cardio for one week- stretching only. I'm also taking a prescript. anti-inflamatory which I think is helping, too.

Good luck, I'll have to come here more often. It's nice to know I'm not the only one going through this. ;)

yes, PLEASE come here more often so we can commiserate! i will be doing stretching for the rest of the week and he said i can do weights. i rarely do legs becausei run so much, so not doing them will not be a factor. that's interesting that he did the MRI first. my doc said that the x-ray and exam really made him doubt stress fracture (plus the actual areas i was sore) and he would only do an MRI if i didn't get any better.

i'm going to call the PT tomorrow. he wrote on the script ultrasound and some other thing that had "ion" in it. i'll laugh if they make me stand on one leg. maybe they'd let me bring my bosu!!!

how sore were you after the shot? i am VERY sore at the point of entry. can't even lean on it right now and it kinda hurts to walk down the stairs. i guess he went in pretty deep.

yeas, please keep in touch!
