Confused-Regarding %Fat

Ok, I'm in the store and I'm in a bit of a rush so I'm not taking time to read lables (yeah I know), but anyway I see the dinner turkey sausages that says only 10% fat. I think to myself, 'Hey, cool.' so I go ahead and grab them.

I'm at home putting stuff away and I take a peak at the nutritional lable of these 'lean' sausages and my jaw drops! They are 160 calories a serving with 10 Grams of fat a serving. That's 90 calories from fat and well...you do the math.:) Those sausages are over 50% fat yet the front lable says 10%fat. My question is what does that 10% fat on the front lable stand for? It sure can't be for the sausages.

Any dietitians or nutritionalist out there who can help me out?

Thanks,

DeeDee

I THINK it means 10% fat by weight. Milk does the same thing, doesn't it?? 2% milk is definitly more than 2% fat, right?

Maybe Keta will get on here and elaborate. Good for you that you know how to see through those calculations!!! That shows a sure sign of someone who understands the food they eat!! I will think about it somemore and see what i come up with. Also, you KNOW if the package does not read BOLDLY reduced fat or light, there is no way it is good for you..well, with sausage that is.

Thank you Janice. I really goofed here. Luckily I don't eat sausage very often, but I love turkey, and turkey versions usually mean leaner. Oh well, I'm out a few bucks, but lesson learned.:)

My advice is to carry a calculator at all times and READ those labels! The nutrition info is the key. Don't read the hype on the front of the package, flip it over and do the math in the store. I'm real big on reading labels.
