?? Combat Conditioning _ Matt Furey

I have his book, "Combat Conditioning". It has a lot of good, body-weight only exercises in it that are challenging. My DD has to do many of them at the Karate studio where she is a student, and she is very strong.

DH had the DVDs called "How to Increase your Flexability" or some such thing. Very poor production values...it is just Matt in what looks like a hotel room, explaining and demonstrating some moves. Not that he doesn't have some good moves....he does, and he knows what he's doing. Just not motivating to me at all. He chats a lot, which takes up time doing nothing of importance. The DVDs wouldn't play on our player, and we had to get another one. I think they were DVD-Rs. His opinion on the DVDs were that they will work if you do what Matt says, but they aren't a great investment.

Thanks, Julie. Based on your feedback, does it mean it is worth to buy his book instead of DVDs?

Thanks

I can't say anything about Matt Furey's DVD's because I don't have any yet - got a bid on some on e-bay - but I DO know that body weight exercises WORK! I've been training that way for several weeks now, and the change in my bod is nothing short of incredible! I'm stronger and much more defined. I'm a believer. Of course, it's not just the Matt Furey method, it's the way the military has always trained. I have the Navy Seals tapes that I'd never done, but I'm going to start using them since I can now do pull-ups.

Well........my brother gave me the book, so I don't know what it costs. However, he does tell you in the book how to build your routine, and put together a workout. If you are a self motivator who has no problem putting together a routine for yourself, and have some good music, I think you would do good. Myself, I do better going along with a video....I think it helps my motivation.

Like Honeybunch says, body-weight exercises really do work. DD is 13, and can do 60 push ups in 1 minute. I know this because she has to do 100 in 2 minutes for her next karate belt test, so I have counted for her. Her "everyday" strength is just awesome....you know, the strength you need to just do everyday stuff like carrying a vaccum up the stairs. She doesn't have a lot of mass; just looks kinda strong. And she has great flexability. I guess I would say it builds functional strength as well as some lean mass.

Again, the only DVDs I have actually seen are the ones to increase flexability.........

Thanks, Julie and Honeybunch.

Honeybunch, where did you buy your Navy Seals tapes? Do they have website I can check out? Did it try the tape yet? Could you write us your feedback after you try it?

Thanks

I got it from Collage several years ago, and watched it but never did them. I will try one this weekend since I'm big-time into pushups and pullups - the 3 tape set includes Total Body Workout, Ab Blast, and Ultimate Aerobic Workout.

What's a body weight exercise? I can't think of any examples. Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but I'd love an explanation!

Oh, sorry, just saw you said pull-ups. What else? Thanks!

Body-weight exercises are where you use no extra weight, like bar bells, etc. Examples would include various types of push ups, squats, head and hand stands, and the like. There are also walks, crawls, bridge work (like back bends) and such.

Could you recommend books regarding Body weight exercises?

Thanks

Wantfit,

I'm sorry, the only one I have is Matt Furey's book. Most of my "knowledge" really comes from watching the karate classes my DD does. However, there are several websites with info on this topic. I will look and see if I still can find the ones I thought looked good! Oh, I do know Books A Million has some....can't remember titles, though.

I have the book right here; let me give you a brief run down.

It is softcover, about 130 pages of info, (and some advertising for his stuff) and lists about 45 exercises (including variations) with instructions and photos. He gives examples of workouts in the back. They are designed to improve functional fitness, flexability and endurance. You may be familiar with some, as he has one-legged squats, one armed push-ups, "supermans", mountain climbers and the like. It is easy to read and follow. Now, I must warn you that some of his stuff, for example "Hindu Squats", may seem controversial. I would go into more detail but I don't know what all he has copywrites on!!

That said, if the above is within your goals, then yes, I feel like you could set up a new or just add into your regular routine. There is no doubt that you would gain strength and flexability if you perform the work correctly. I do not think there is a whole lot of cardio benefit, though.

Now that I have re-visited my book, I think you have spurred me on to add in some of his stuff! Doing this kind of routine consistently would bore me, but added in with Cathe I can see great benefit!

Thanks, Julie. What you wrote gave me enough information. I used to train martial arts when I was in early grade school and pretty good about it. That is why when my therapist told me my muscle tightness was one of reason caused my knees problem, I can't believe it. Time flies. I am getting old!! LOL!

I might order his book and add some of his move into my Cathe's strength workout. I don't care too much aerobic since I have many Cathe's aerobic and interval training dvds. I just want to add some functional and flexibility training to help heal or maintain my knees situation. Hopefully I can start running training soon. I want to do half marathon.

Thanks

If you're talking about Matt Furey, I haven't read his book but I ordered his Combat Conditioning DVD's from e-bay and they should come this week.
