Coconut Oil/Butter

In the August issue of Oxygen there were a couple of recipes that used coconut butter. I had never heard of it before. I searched on line and see that it is supposed to be good for you. Does anyone out there use it? How is it? One brand that sounds good is Artisana but it appears that you can only buy that brand on line. Has anyone tried it? Thanks for any info.

Coconut butter and coconut oil are the same thing. When it's above 80 degrees or so, it's liquid, and therefore an oil. When it's under 80 degrees or so, it's a solid, and therefore a 'butter'.

There is also something called "coconut cream,' which is the meat of a coconut blended to a smooth consistency. That will remain more solid, but when it gets hot, there will be a layer of oil that rises to the top. Tropical traditions is one brand: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/coconut_cream_concentrate.htm

Coconut oil

You can get coconut oil at a health food store. Make sure you buy Virgin Coconut Oil.

There are many uses for using it. Some poeple use it for thier skin. Some for their hair. Some for their health. You can read about the different uses on the internet. Some say it's good for you and some say that it is bad. My daughter's Dr recomended takeing 2 T of Virgin Coconut oil a day for her sinus problems. So I guess it can't be that bad for you.

Or you could go to the library and see if you can find two books about this. "The Coconut Oil Miracle" by Bruce Fife. and "The Coconut Diet" by Cherie Calbon. Both books have recipes on the use of Coconut oil.

I use it on my skin, hair and in place of butter in several cookie recipes. When I get a big honking cut from biking and a nasty scabs starts to form, I smear it with coconut oil, makes it heal faster with less of a scar later. I also put it in my protein shake for taste since I substitute water for milk.
