Clothing Frustration!

Okay, here's the background. Two yrs ago I weighed over 250# and wore a size 22-24. I have worked very hard the last 20 months and have lost almost 70# and in a size 12. There's more to come off, but in the mean time, I am trying stay dressed, you know what I mean?

Anyway, here's my gripe with the clothing world....why can't they make all the sizes univeral!?!?!? I have been comfortably in size 12 for the last month or so and have been able to take something off the rack and know that it's going to fit. Well, today I went into a store, took a cute size 12 pair of shorts off the rack (didn't try them on as I just got off of 12 hr shift and was tired) and tossed them into my cart. I went to try them on at home, and I could barely get them up past my butt and forget even getting them closed!!!! I had to double check that I didn't grab an 8 or 10 they were that small!!! In some clothing lines, a Large is 14-16 whereas others is 12-14 for a large. I just don't get it!

It used to be that I wore an 8 in jeans. Now an 8 is too big for me. The clothing industry are now making a lot of clothing so size 12 will wear 10, a size 10 will wear an 8, and a size 8 will wear a 6... well you get my drift.

Now, I wear a size 4-5 jeans, but if I had an older size pair (1990's) of jeans, trust me, I wouldn't be able to fit into them. They are comming up with all kinds of ways to sell thier products, and this takes the cake! It does work though. Who wouldn't like to brag a smaller size?

I think that I had heard about the "new trend" in sizes a few years ago, something about making us feel better about the size of clothes we wear. But this morning was a little deflating, to say the least!
 
I've noticed this as well. I'm so sick of the trial & error process, by which I have to find out the hard way, over and over again, which stores & brands have which sizing quirks. I know my butt 'n' thighs are too big for Old Navy size 8, but Gloria Vanderbilt size 8 is perfect. Skirts at Mervyn's have to be size 4 or size small. But that's another planet! Only on another planet would I wear size 4 or size small anything. I fit into Ralph Lauren jeans size 6--but only the ones I've found at Ross Dress for Less. Other jeans of mine are size 10. My swimsuit is size 10. I don't get it. I'm also tired of trying on clothes. I have to go to the fitting room with a huge selection of clothes, because I have to try on 2 or 3 different sizes of the same things! And some places limit the number of items you can take in at one time. And what if there's a waiting line for the fitting rooms? I've got two little kids at home--I don't have time for all this trying on different sizes nonsense!

But still want clothes that fit.

Well, don't you worry. As long as you continue with losing weight and keeping yourself fit healthy and happy, you'll get where you want to be sooner than you think.

Thanks! It's been a long road so far, but one I am obviously committed to (having gone through not 1 but 2 separate 6 month plateaus!). It's still been a fun and eye opening journey!

Okay, let's edit what I said earlier about those shorts. First of all, I still think that the sizing game the clothing industry is a bunch of Hooey! Anyway, I re-tried the shorts on and I could actually get them on and buttoned/zipped! Yes, they were tight, but they closed without me sucking in and turning blue!!! Couldn't tell you what the deal was this morning, maybe just super bloated after working all night, or something, or maybe I was mis-remembering out of extreme fatigue (I tried them on about noon after being up since yesterday at 4pm). Who knows, but I don't feel so bad about it, now!

My clothing runs the friggin' gammit in sizes! I mostly buy size 4's currently but still have size 9's that fit! WTH!? It's crazy!!! I never take it for granted that ANYTHING is going to fit anymore...two times I have purchased the same style and size bottom cause I tried one on and it fit. Well, both times when I got them home, the pair that I DIDN'T try on was decidedly smaller! They fit but were much tighter than the other pair! ACK!x(

I know what you mean about clothes from years ago as well...part of the problem for me is that years ago low rise was not in so everything went up to the waist. I have a thick waist so a size 4 from years ago would not fit me today but a size 4 today DOES because I wear all low rise or just below the waist now.
 
sizes are not universal you can only get away with buying tops with knowing it fits but not bottoms i have 5 jr 6misses 7 jr 8 mises and 9 jr in my closet in jeans thats 4 different sizes! bottoms you must try on.
 
Since I'm getting married in June, I'm having the same problem with trying on dresses. The ladies at the shop even said that the dresses run 2 sizes smaller. So if I'm trying on a 12 it's actually a 8. Now how can anyone figure out what size to actually get. Also, I have bigger hips than I do a waist, so getting short/jeans that fit the hips and the waist is very hard. I end up getting ones that fit my hips and then just wear a belt. It sucks...

I was very fortunate when I found that Wal-Mart has started selling 2 pc bathing suit tops separately from bottoms for that very same reason! That, and I have bee losing weight on top faster than on the bottom.

This is what they refer to as "vanity sizing", as if it makes us feel better to buy smaller clothes. Well, we do, of course, but we also know the little game clothing manufacturers are playing, and we are NOT amused!
