Climbing Training

I would like to know if there is someone else in this forum who is a sport climber and how they train.

I can go to my climbing-gym only 1-2 times a week and this is, of course, not enough alone for a serious training. So, I've started with Cathe DVDs for around 9 months now.
I essentially do a lot of cardio and abs work in the days I don't go climbing.
I've seen since this spring an incredible improvement and I'm really happy, but I would like to improve even more.

I had a look to the STS program and tried one routine to have a better overview. It also looks pretty interesting for my goal. However, I have some doubt about how to combine the two trainings - STS and climbing -, taking into account that, for several reasons, I should also do some cardio in between. Moreover, the two trainings are both pretty heavy. So, it seems to me that the standard 3 1/2 months rotation with three STS training in a week is a little bit too much for me.

Do you think is possible to do it slower, for example doing only 1-2 STS training in a week and employing in this way more time to finish the program?
Did you have some experience of combining climbing and STS?

Cheers
Anna

Hi Anna - The site isn't free anymore, but Rob Shaul over at Mountain Athlete (http://www.mtnathlete.com/index.php) develops training for climbers and mountaineers, as well as other mountain sports like skiing. There's a link to some free sessions that shows some examples and explanations of the training he programs. Rob also has a youtube channel where you can see a little of what they do. http://www.youtube.com/user/robshaul

I believe an online subscription for his programming is around $25/year. I'm planning to join soon for their dryland ski training.

Sorry I can't speak specifically to your STS question. I don't have the series, and know nothing about it.

Hi Gayle,

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I'll have a look.
