Chris: A request

The blog states that "We will soon close our current forums and launch our brand new forums using new software. This will mean a new server and address for our current Forums. We will transfer all of the threads in our current forums to the new forums."

The new forum sounds awesome, and I can't wait for it. I just have one question/request: Do you have to transfer ALL of the threads? I think I've been posting here for at least 5, maybe 6? years. I was a bit more naive when I first started out, and it makes me uncomfortable knowing that everything I've ever posted over all these years is available to come up in a Google search by outsiders. I would like to see the old stuff go away, or at least be available only in some much more private way.

I love that you're planning to have a private messaging system for social groups. It all sounds absolutely fabulous! I think we've all become more cagey and cautious in recent years, especially in regard to identity theft and such. This would seem like the perfect time to "clean up" some of the ancient posts that I assume are still out there (I haven't checked to see how far they go back, and don't really want to ;) )

Thanks for your consideration.

Not Chris :), but since the new Cathe site is going to require a login to access all the info, and that means google can't search it. So your old posts won't be google-able.

You can also edit your old posts, so if there is something you really don't want people to read, you can always change or delete it.

Did you read that this is a feature of the new forums? Right now,on this forum, the editing window is about 10 minutes. After that, no more edits or deletes are possible (definitely not for years-old posts).

We are planning on transferring all of the threads from our current forum. I’m sure we have all said things we regret through the years, but I wouldn’t worry too much as old threads are rarely looked at.

Well, I don't mind so much people on the boards looking back, but what about Google searches? I keep having this nightmare fantasy that my old boss finds out my username on the Cathe boards, googles it, and finds out all the old .... ahem....things I said about him. ;)

Currently, you need a password to post. Will the new forums require a password to view? Please say "yes"???

The new forums will be similar to the current forums in that you will need to login to post, but not to view.

Thanks for letting us know. I guess my ancient posts will be immortalized. :( But I guess I can take a new username so I can disassociate myself from them. ;) :D

Thanks for answering my question so promptly!

Just curious, when the transfer is made, will the "Charter members" still have their special designation? Didn't they get named that after a prior forum update? Will there be anything similar for those of us who are members prior to this change? Will we keep our current "member since" dates? Not a burning question, like I said, I'm just curious.

Nancy - a while back, I Googled myself to see what would turn up. I'm lucky and had virtually nothing! And not one single thing showed up from Catheland.

not to stir trouble but...

If you don't want people to know what you have said about them, remember the old addage...

If you can't say something nice...

Years & years ago I belonged to a forum where a member had posted personal inflammatory information about a client. Another member of that forum found out where the poster worked & emailed a link of the thread to her boss. The person that posted inflammatory information was promptly fired from her job.

IMHO she should have been. You never know who is watching.

WOW! Do you really think that was the *right* thing to do? Not to stir trouble as well, but two wrongs don't make a right and someone going behind another person's back with the intent of causing trouble for that person certainly doesn't seem like a very nice thing to do.

I understand that you feel the original party was wrong to be posting inflammatory information about a client but there certainly seems to be a better way to handle that situation than this. This just seems downright evil. I would never think that I personally had the right to police someone else's behavior on a public forum. JMO

RE: not to stir trouble but...

Many years ago there was a girl where I worked who did something really evil and unprovoked to me (too long to go into). I couldn't understand why she did it and everybody at work thought it was a horrid and immature act. Next thing I knew a co-worker was handing me a piece of paper with the girl's social security number on it. Ms. Evil was taking college courses, paid for by the government, because she was considered "low income." Fraud, because she had a very well-paying job, working for the State. My buddy called a friend at the social security administration to request a favor, thinking I'd turn in Ms. Evil and get her in a ton of trouble. Days went by. Finally, my buddy asked me if I'd "done anything yet?" I said I hadn't. Then she squinted her eyes at me and said "You're not going to... are you?" I said "You know... I can't. I just feel, when you're evil, it's only a matter of time before you bring your own house down." Did she? I have no idea. But anyone that nasty can't be happy.

the point being

Not that the woman was fired from her job or that the person that sent the email to her boss was in the right or that my opinion was that the women who turned her in did the right thing.

The point was that you shouldn't post things on the internet if you don't want others to find out what you say (have said) about them.

As I originally stated...

If you can't say something nice...

RE: the point being

I never misunderstood your point. I was only commenting on your story. Plus, being worried about the possibility that your boss, etc., may somehow stumble upon comments that you have made on an open forum(as the OP stated) is significantly different than a virtual stranger going out their way to intentionally cause you harm.

No offense, but this is the internet. Those are things YOU need to think about and be responsible for before you ever type your first words. You can't expect Cathe's staff to CYA. ;-)
