OK, girls. I'm sold. I've been looking at these online and they are awesome. Only problem, I can't get one here in Uganda! And overseas shipping is slow and costly. I need to find someone who is flying here to visit--pronto.
Gloria—I know what you mean about being nervous about training. I’m only doing a ½, but every once in while I think, “WTH was I thinking?”
Wendy—In regard to marathon training and STS . . . TXGin posted a question to Cathe a few weeks ago. Gin is trainng for a 1/2m and was wondering if she could do that and do STS at the same time. Cathe didn’t recommend it. Now, Cathe is not the end-all of fitness advice. And I think Carole said that she was planning to do STS in conjunction with her marathon training. But I just wanted to chime in on what I had read. RE: why we moved to Africa, I’ll make that a separate post. No, I haven’t answered that question yet.
Wendi—I think Shovel Max and Hay Max will be great workouts. Definite upper body work, and potential cardio too.
Karen—((((Hugs.))))) When I was in high school, I helped my mom “house sit” and “baby sit” for friends of ours whose mom had alzheimers so they could have some time away. It was heart-breaking, an d I wasn’t even a family member. What you described sounds just awful—I’m so sorry for your difficult situation. Sorry about your depression and missed workouts. You know, we only have a certain amount of emotional energy—and when we’re using it up on other things, it’s hard to fit in the workouts. ITA agree with the other Cheetah who said that the workouts will come back. Don’t add guilt to your plate right now.
And, Any Cheetah—I’ve been able to pick up from the threads the gist of what is going on with Karen’s mom. But I don’t know the story. Would someone besides Karen be willing to bring me up to speed? Karen, please don’t feel like you need to be the one to relate the story again! (((Hugs.)))
Carole—OK. I’m online looking at Garmins right now. The only hitch will be that I’ve got to get it here from the States. Your six miles in the snow sounds wonderful right now. I ran a very sweaty 6 miles in the heat here this morning!
Brighton—Yes, our DHs sound like they’re on the same page—good sports about the veg food, but cautious, skeptical. Mine has been on the same journey as yours of no longer craving garbage and actually enjoying good food. He used to like to run or lift but had no interest in adjusting his diet. He finally figured out that was a key component to looking the way that he wanted to. It has been great to have someone else in the house supporting and encouraging me in healthy eating choices. With 3 kids who want mac & cheese and hot dogs, it’s hard to be motivated to cook healthy if I’m the only one who’ll eat it! Lol’d at your description of a tempo run: “comfortably hard.” Love it. Also lol’d at your equation of snow + running!
Jackie—I’ve read that on a first 1/2m that the goal should be to finish and not to try to achieve a certain time. However, the sites have also projected that with my current running speed, I ought to be able to do the ½ in about 2:18. So, we’ll see. I’m going to be pretty pumped just to finish! Thanks for asking.
Christine—Yes! I’ve tried to get train tickets in India. It took a friend of ours (who happened to work for the RR) a whole week to get them for us the last time I was there. It was crazy. Also, one time I tried to get travelers checks in Italy. It took 4 hours—and that’s a 1st world country! We’re definitely spoiled in America, but I do have to confess that I love efficiency! Thanks re: the take on vegetarian eating that includes fish. I had wondered if it might be something like that.
Dallas—Fun that you have a snow day. Glad that someone else understands my compulsive need to be accurate?
Judy—Yes, it’s definitely hot here. I discovered this morning that I really must be done by 8am with my runs. About that time, I was thinking that I would be happy to endure Shovel Max for a little coolness. When I came home and was getting my post-workout drink, I hovered over my deep freeze for an extra minute. It was glorious!! I read one site that said that for every 5 degrees above 60 that you should account for an extra 30 seconds per mile. That was so satisfying!!
Cathy—I’m so honored that you liked my thread title yesterday, since you’re the guru of creative thread titles! As I told Carole, I’m looking into a Garmin. Oh, yes. Love the foam roller. My knees don’t hurt me at all when I run now, and that was the whole reason that I had stopped.
Thanks to all of you for your encouragement on my running time for the tempo. I was feeling pretty good about it myself. Back in Feb when I returned to running, the best I could do was 31:10 for 3 miles, and that was on the treadmill. So 26:56 on the road was really awesome for me.
Today I did 10K (6.2 miles I think?), and did it in 61:17. It was funny because I felt like I was almost floating for the first 3 miles, but at the beginning of mile 4 a bear jumped on my back and never got off! How is that possible?! Granted, mile 4 IS a tough one on this route. It starts with my own personal little Heartbreak Hill: 800m of gradual but steady climb. But still . . . I really never got my second wind. BUT I did make it through. I felt in some ways as if this was the test of my 1/2m capability. It’s the first week of “real” training, and this is the long run, and it’s the shortest long run that I do. If I could make it through . . . I’m in. If not, might as well quit now. AND I DID IT! However, I think I’m going to choose a flatter route for my first attempt at 8 miles next week!
I promise I won't hog starting the thread, but I'm 9 hours ahead of CST, so I have a jump on the day from here!
