:::CHEETAHS::: A need for Speed on Sunday April 6

Hi everyone! Back after my nap and ready to take on the world.
Well, my run went quite well, except for one thing. I hadn't run this particular trail for a couple of months when it was still quite cool. We had alot of winter precipitation and the lake level was high and we've had lots of warm weather.... so.... BUG CITY! I had to run thru clouds of annoying tiny bugs. Ended up having a bug breakfast. I don't want to THINK about how many of those things I swallowed:eek:     Now that I've sufficiently grossed you all out:p :p :p

Jennie- Welcome! I see you've already gotten some fabulous advice.
I work my legs out about twice a week and run about 4 times/wk. Most of us do one "long"run a week also. Welcome to the wonderful world of running. If you're smart you will get fabulously fit and stay uninjured.... and have a blast! Another great website to check out is www.coolrunning.com. They have a C25K (couch to 5k) program that is great for beginners.... also a walk/run. Keep up the good work and do let us know how you are doing.

Wendi- Congrats on mastering the stability ball tricep dip! Now.... how are you on the SB push up? }(

Cathy- Oh Dear.... you have me in a conundrum now (I love that word)
I was so intent on running Philly but now you have me turned onto the idea of Disney and I SO WANT to be with you and Wendy on your first full mary. You do realize that even tho it will be a nice warm getaway it will mean LOTS of COLD long runs to prepare in Nov/Dec??? Just a thought... playing devil's advocate. What's a cheetah to do??? Great idea on keeping it low key on your workouts for now!!

Wendy- My recruiter is busy compiling several job prospects for me and should have several to present in a couple of weeks. She seems to feel the best prospects are actually just outside the Philly area... like Media and Coatesville... we'll see! Hey, with everything I'll be going thru with this move, I may be the one tying my self to you and Cathy with the 18 miler! See above post to Cathy re: Disney. Very intriguing possibility!

SunnyD- Well, no BIG recent news on my move. Just that things keep progressing and getting really serious. We have definitely committed to a may 6-8 target date. Hope you are getting in a great stretch.

Judy- Welcome back!!! Hey, I'll run ANY distance with you!!

Gotta get some grub now. I guess those bugs didn't quite satisfy me! I'll do some work around the house and then have some fun with ASJ :7

Good Afternoon Cheetahs!

Just got back from a 7 mile trail run. It was fun and Jimmy had a blast. It’s still cold and overcast but we figured what the heck. I have also decided to do the 12 week Enter the Kettlebell program. I figured I really should if I intended to do kettlebells the way they are supposed to be done. I downloaded Anthony’s workbook and have The Enter The Kettlebell book on the way (for Wed delivery while DH is in Ft. Lauderdale). It’s going to be interesting following a book and not a video, but I figured I’d have a lot of company with the NROLW’ers. :p

Very exciting talk about marathons!! I think the Disney one would be a blast! I’m with Judy in that I do not see myself doing a marathon, but maybe I can talk DH into going with me to cheer ya’ll on! He keeps talking about visiting the Keys – we can start or end by being the cheering section – although if there is a half – he’ll probably want to run it.

Shelly – Glad you had a mellower night! That must feel good once in a while! CIA Step Jam is ASJ – I got it mixed up. But I decided that since I am doing ETK and need to really train for this 10.6 miler coming up at the end of April, I’d better not order it and concentrate on what I have. :p Sorry for the buggy run! Just think of all the protein you consumed! Ick. :p I’ve run through those and actually have come back with sore ARMS from waving the buggers away!

Wendi – WAY TO GO!! Making it through those dips is not a LITTLE victory! I’m impressed! Glad you had a good time with SO last night!

Cathy – Oooh, that sounds like fun!! And what a place for your first full marathon! Don’t step on the scale, so you have another day to enjoy whatever you what to do. Have fun with your run and Firepower!

Wendy – LOVE THE PHOTO! Thanks for sharing! Glad the party wasn’t too overwhelming! I think you, Cathy and Shelly should run the full! That would be incredible!! I wish I could, but running 26.2 miles is just not in the cards for me.

Carole – I can’t wait to see your hair straight! NICE bench!!! I’ll bet you are enjoying it!! I’ll bet you can use it as a pull up bench, too with a bar on the rack - if you choose. It looks sweet!

Sunny – Enjoy your stretch! I’m with you on the full mary – I’m happy with the half – and actually, thrilled with 10k’s. Funny about the workouts getting longer as you progress in NROLW – that’s the way it is in ETK.

Judy – Glad you enjoyed yourself at the hockey tournament. Sorry DS’s team didn’t advance, but glad he did very well! Enjoy NROL.

Jennie – Welcome! I hope you post frequently. The other cheetahs are better than I for answering your questions – but I wanted to welcome you!

Well, my blow dryer died. I go through them about every 3-4 years or so. This one lasted longer than most. But, I have wet hair. *sighs* I’ll have to run out and get a new one, plus hit Safeway as the higher end store I went to yesterday charges a lot more for certain necessities like Toilet Paper. And then it’s LaundryMax. Oh joy! :p Have a great day all!

Hey Chicks!

DH and DS just left to visit DH's cousin so I am home ALONE for about 2 hours! Ahhhhh the solitude!:+

So unfortunately I just realized something. DH and I are going out to Vegas in March of 09. This could put a serious damper on any thoughts of me heading to FLA in January!x( Although....DH just went to NM for his bowling tourney last month knowing full well this month was our FLA trip so maybe there is hope after all....Ofcourse now what Shelly said about training in the winter for this...um...yeah, I'm not so sure I wanna do that. GRRRR. But a full mary in Disney...OMG...that WOULD be AWESOME!!! I'm so confused! Somebody help me!:p There's got to be plenty of options so I'm gonna do some surfing and see what I can find just to be able to throw other ideas out there. I want to be sure I've seen it all before I commit to something. :)

Judy: So how did you like your first day of NROL?

Sunny: Thanks for the vote of confidence girl!:) So a warm bath with epsom salts helps sore hips? Good to know! I will definately be buying epsom salts when I am at the foodstore next! How old is DS#2 now?? I remember when we were posting in the pregnancy forums together. Who were you pregnant with at the time? One of your DS' must be close to Joey's age.

Carole: Thanks re the pic. It could be alot better but it's the best so far. LOL on not being able to see much carpet. That happens to me too. Good job on the 7 miles. Glad the pain was minimal.

Cathy: No, I didn't order the race pic. I still don't like it ENOUGH to actually have a copy of it!:p So did you get lots accomplished today? What was your work out?

Shelly: Eeeeewwww on the bug thing! Just think of the ingested ones as extra protein!:p I read your post to Cathy about Disney. It's such a big decision to make. There are both pros and cons to choosing that mary. It's gonna drive me batty! LOL

Christine: What's the 12 week Enter the Kettlebell program that you are talking about?? Perhaps wherever we decide to run a full mary will also have a half so that other Cheetahs who do not want to go for the full have another option. Would you consider it if that were the case? Sorry about your blow dryer dying on you. I have one but rarely use it. I can't be bothered. Now that I have the perm I have absolutely no use for it and LOVE it that way!:D I'm doing laundrymax myself today. FINALLY started picking out my wardrobe for my FLA trip so I have some stuff to wash as well as the regular weekly loads. I don't know about you but for me, laundry is my most hated chore! ACK!x(

Okay, I'm all caught up. Time to for some mary surfing!}(

BBIAB!

Hey everyone!!

Shelly – Good job on the run! Yuck on the bug breakfast, though! Ewww! I am anxious to hear what you think of Sharon’s workout! The Charleston Distance run is a 15 mile race. It is very hilly, but I thought that it would be a good “middle” race for a training run for the marathon in November. What do you think? I have never run it before, and I have NEVER run a marathon, either! I have done 2 halfs.

Wendi – Good job on DM! Don’t be embarrassed about the tricep dips with a “braced” ball….I have done that too….a lot :>)

Cathy – I wish I could do Disney…but since I am supposed to be training to run a mary in Nov. with my “running buddy”, I think that would be too soon for me to do another one. But I really want to run with all of you guys! One of these days!!! (soon, I hope!). I am sure the stress exhausted you….I’ll be you’ll be bouncing back real soon!!!

Wendy – That is a great race pic! Good job on your workout! Don’t those biceps just fry you? Looks like you are thinking like me with your 18 miler being a “warm up to the marathon. I just asked Shelly about my 15 mile race being okay to do for a “warm up” for a November marathon. Looks like we are on the same wave length, so I feel better, now :>) I always second guess my running :<(

Carole – I absolutely love the weight bench! It is awesome!!! That is really cool that the bench and rack are separate! I would love to have a squat rack! Was it very hard to put together?

Sunny – enjoy your stretch X!

Judy – Welcome back! Good luck on your NROL! Enjoy your “college days” with your DD! I remember those days! They were fun and exciting for my DD and I! I am sorry about DS’s hockey team not advancing! But they obviously did a very good job!

Jennie – Welcome! I would say that after you get a little more used to running, your hips won’t get as sore. A lot of times, for me, if I go a long time without running outside and only run on the TM….and then go run outside, my hips are sore the next day. As for shin splints, take it slower at the start of the run and make sure you are really warmed up before you do any type of speed. Everyone has already give you great advice….this is just my experience :>)

Christine – You said that you wanted to do KB’s the way they were supposed to be done. Are we supposed to do those exclusively, or mix in traditional strength, as well. I am confused about that. I go through blow dryers every couple of years ….but I swear…it seems like they used to last for a long, long time! :<(

This morning I did GS C&T, the 3rd workout of CoreMax and ran 4 miles.

Hi to everyone and hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Linda

Wendy – That cruise sounds incredible. Wouldn’t that be a blast?! I’d definitely consider coming out to cheer on our “Virgin Mary’s”. Especially if the mary is in a fun place like Disney World. I think just finding the right Marathon for you and Cathy is much more important than worrying about whether others can join. Yeah, I’m not a fan of LaundryMax either. When are you leaving for FLA? Enter the Kettlebell is a book by Pavel, the one who really introduced kettlebells to the US. The book outlines recommendations. AOS has put together a workbook to take you through the 12 week program Pavel outlined. It gives you the specific moves, etc. It’s designed to get you solid on the kettlebell basics and to increase your strength and endurance. So, it’s kind of like starting at the beginning, but everyone I talked to said they learned so much, even after doing bells for a year or so.

Linda – If you talk to kettlebell enthusiasts, they recommend a series of kettlebell and body weight exercises to keep fit (and flexible, it could be argued). They claim you do not need traditional weight lifting to keep your strength (and if you look at Steve Cotter – do a youtube search, I’d tend to agree – he does only kettlebells and body weight work). If you plan to mix traditional weight training and kettlebell training, I’d simply treat the kettlebell work as a totally body workout, because it really is. As I mentioned to Wendy, ETK is a Book and AOS put together a workbook based on the book. I think what makes AOS so special is that Anthony seems to really follow the idea of Pavel’s book, even in his videos. Newport is tough, but it’s a mix of kettlebell and body weight exercises. As is Firepower, actually. But there are five foundation moves – the swing, the snatch, the squat (and he has you do wall squats FACING the wall to increase the flexibility of the hips), the clean and press and the Turkish get up. I’ve heard it argued that you have to perfect these five foundations moves before you can really benefit from kettlebells, and ETK does that. I’m keeping a blog on my rotation over at Sparkpeople. Same user name – if you want to read it. The first week is 4 workouts (M,T R and F) M&R are a warm up and swings. TF are a warm up and turkish get ups for 5 minutes. I'm shaking in my shoes... :p

Hello again, girls~

Cut myself off from the grading a short while ago (250 papers down, 185 to go) and plugged in Firepower General Alarm, which was 20 minutes with no breaks. Moved at a good clip. The 5-minute snatch test at the end slays me. I only last for 3 minutes. I think that will be it for me for tonight.

Carole :: hope the foam roller did the trick for your hip.

Shelly :: hate inhaling the bugs!...Yeah, I’ve thought of the issue of training in the cold/dark through November/December, but I do think it’s do-able. The fun atmosphere and the temperature are big factors for me. And since I won’t be going skiing this Christmas, it seems like a good year to do this one.

Christine :: Smiling at your strategic ordering. :) Unfortunately, the Disney HM field is already closed for ’09. Stinks. I ended up not running because it was rainy & nasty out there today. Hadn’t paid mind to the weather forecast. ETA: Oh boy, I'm feeling the enabling with ETK!! I so appreciate all the good info you share. :)

Wendy :: I hope that you decide to join me for Disney but understand if it’s not do-able for you. That cruise does look cool.

Linda :: great workout! I’m curious to know more about EKB, too. I think I am going to just use the kb’s for awhile and see what happens.

Hey Ladies.

Sorry it took me so long to get back here. Our power went out for a while. ACK! x(

Here's what I've found that looks cool if traveling is an option:

Chicago Marathon: October 2009

Las Vegas Marathon: November 2009

Rock and Roll Marathon in San Antonio, TX: November 2009

As well as Disney in January 2009

They all sound good to me! Any input??

ETA: I found other cool marys that took place more mid-year (May/June) but I was looking for the flat courses and these were hillier. I don't think we (Cathy and I) need that for our first!:p
