cell phones & the gym..ACK!!!

So this lady comes on the treadmill next to me and is yakking her head off and walking at a snails pace. I turned up my headphones full blast and she was still so loud. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in the gym, ever. I was giving her multiple dirty looks but she didn't seem to care. People like that make me want to do unkind, unmommy like things x( Seriously, if the phone call is that freaking important or you're on call or something please just go elsewhere until you are finished!!!! Grrrr. Okay, carry on ;)

Debbie,

I would personally never do this because I am a scarry cat, but I just
thought it would be funny if you went and got your cell phone
and started talking louder (like a valley girl perhaps) and walk at a fast pace at the same time. :0) I wonder what her reaction would be

or

find another treadmill.

We actually have a ban on cell phones at my gym because of the cameras. The gym says it could be an invasion of privacy, especially in the locker rooms. There are times when I needed to use my phone, but after hearing Debbie's story, I'm glad there's a ban!

Oh, Debbie--you were right to be peeved! I HATE thatx( . I can't help but laugh when you say you want to do unkind, unmommy-like things. Yes ma'am, they broke the mold after they made you!

Okay, I really can't stand it when you're out to dinner with your DH in an expensive, fancy schmancy restaurant, and the person at the table next to you is yakking on the cell phone. It totally ruins the whole evening! I wish restaurants would ban cp's too.

Debbie I am with you!!! I can't stand when people are on the phone at the gym. That is one of the reasons I did not renew my membership at the gym down the street from me. Now only was the place a TOTAL meat market, but people would be on the cell phone yacking away while trying to operate cardio equipment. And in the weight area, guys would be sitting on the benches talking on the phone instead of lifting weights. It would drive me absolutely bananas!!!x(

Now,I drive to downtown Chicago to the gym.(Only a 5-7 min. drive). And luckily, I haven't run into the same problems. The gym in actually in the lower level of the Bloomingdale's building, so I don't think anyone can get a signal!!}(

My gym has a ban on cell phones as well and for the most part people are compliant. The spa I work at has signs all over to place to PLEASE turn all electronic devices off and just yesterday I'm walking through the lounge with the spa owner and some buddy boy's on the phone talking about freakin' underwriters and blah, blah, blah while some other lady's trying to grab a quiet moment enjoying the river view. The guy was a such a knob, the owner asks him to turn off the phone and buddy's response is 'I'm from California!' as if that's relevant to ANYTHING!!! He put his phone away but wasn't too happy about it. His answer has had me chuckling all day....some people...

I"m glad that you brought this up!! I was just telling my DH yesterday about what happened at the fitness center concerning the cell phone. We live in a small town, so the fitness center is relatively small. It was kinda quiet while I was there, about 8 people. There were 2 men over at the free weight area and one of them was lifting heavy weights for a chest press. The other guy was standing nearby lifting weights for shoulders. One of their cell phones rang and it startled the guy doing the chest press. HE NEARLY DROPPED THE WEIGHT ON HIS HEAD!! now, how's that for scary and dangerous???? I think we should ban the cell phones there. I told the director and she said they were gonna looked into it!!

take care:)

Hey Laurie - that is a classic! I'll have to use that excuse next time I do something stupid (I live in California)...

Oh my gosh, guys. thanks for the stories! I can't believe a guy almost dropped his weights. That's scary dangerous. I like belonging to the gym for the most part for classes and treadmill which I don't have -- and mostly people with the cell phones aren't around me. Really though, what kind of w/o are you getting strolling and yakking, except flapping your gums? Next time I need to do dirty looks and a really loud AHEM!!!!! Crazy people. Just when you think you've seen 'em all.....

Cute! On the treadmill & obnoxious at the same time!!!

Deb, I totally think you could have pulled this off. Not the obnoxious part, but just that you are that much more fit.;-)

Try being a studio group fitness instructor and having a participant whip out her phone and start yakking right in the middle of class. As an aqua instructor I've never had that happen (which is one of many reasons I'm an aqua and not a studio instructor) but I've heard many, many stories. In spinning class. In step class. In group lifting class. In yoga and Pilates classes. You name it.

Wow, that's obnoxious! I use my cell phone in the gym for brief, necessary calls, but only in the locker room--even then I make sure I'm off to the side somewhere in an area that's not crowded so that I don't disturb anyone. Also, I don't want anyone to know my business, no matter how trivial. I don't understand people who walk around broadcasting their personal business to the world while on the cell phone. One of these days, when I'm stuck hearing a complete stranger's phone conversation, I'm going to ask them about some really personal detail that I overheard. If they're too rude to find someplace to talk that doesn't disturb everyone, then I'm not going to be polite and pretend not to listen.

LOL @ bunbun :)

AJ, I can only imagine. Rules apparently mean nothing to some people. Into the pit I say }(
