A recent US report has indicated that American cats and dogs are fattening up proportionately with their owners - the fattest westerners in the world - and are now also amongst the fattest pets in the world.
Research is still being done on canine lap-banding surgery but the Catkins diet is already available in some States through a Vet. Just like the humans "Atkins" diet, the focus is on less carbohydrate in the food but also less protein (as cats bodies do not process protein very well).
Maybe a cat/dog "vegaterian" diet is possible!
Interesting enough, if your household has a cat AND a dog....the dog will be far more overweight than the cat. Its all down to good old fashion competition between the two, The dog will always win out in the speed he can chow down before the cat can have a look in, and will also be the one hand fed from the dinner table.
The moral?
If you have a FAT cat, get a dog and your cat will loose weight
If you have a FAT dog, get a cat - that will give the dog something to chase - thus exercise
