Cathy's cueing

Hello everyone

Today was the first time I ever tried Cathe's cardio workout - Low Max, I am an intermediate exerciser, I have never tried any of her cardio workouts, coz they scare me, I saw this workout on Fit Tv, and thought it would be something I could do, so I bought it. I could pick up most of the steps, and cathy's cueing is very nice on all the steps, except tht she does not mention which leg to start with, i was quite confused on tht, I tried to do right first thn left, but many times I found myself doing the same leg twice and ignoring the other leg. Any suggestions on this one??

You ALWAYS start with the right leg. Cathe always leads with HER left, so you're doing a mirror image of what she's doing.

I hope that helps!

Also, Cathe doesn't "teach" the moves as fully as they might in some face to face aerobics classes. She explains (in older videos) that your video workout will not change, so she spends less time reviewing steps and combinations than a live class. I believe she does this in an effort to prevent boredom. Just keep going over it. You'll get it!

Did you preview the workout before doing it? I always do, and kind of workout mentally while I watch. When I get to a move that looks a bit more complicated, I replay it and note the count of the moves more carefully. I also sometimes make my own cues for moves that I think are not cued as clearly as I'd like: as in the "two triples around the step" which I say to myself as "step-step-triple-triple" to make sure to take those first two steps.

IMO, there are several places in Low Max that are poorly cued. And at least one where Cathe seems to forget what she's doing, or at least forgets the cue, and doesn't cue (when she combines the reverse mambo with whatever move follows it). I find her earlier DVDs (pre-Body Blast) to be better cued.

As for which leg to start with, I guess I never noticed that as a problem. Probably because most moves start on the right. As Shelley mentioned, you should mirror what Cathe does (strange as it seems to me, there are people who try to work out stepping on their right when Cathe steps on her right, which would look like our left in a mirror: so they'd be going right while it looks like Cathe is going left. THAT would confuse ME big time!)

Give it some time, and you'll really enjoy the workout!

I've had my copy for a few weeks and the first time I did it, I was sure I'd NEVER do it right. I kept ending up facing the wrong way, doing the wrong thing, etc. I tried to do the premixes for a few weeks, to kind of get the hang of it. That way it was less I had to follow and learn. It worked pretty well- I've maybe done the workout now 8 times and I pretty much can follow her.

Keep it up and you learn a little bit each time.

I was glad no one was in my house while I was learning- I ended up all over the place! :)

You can do quite a few different things. 1. Just mirror Cathe, do what she does, if she's using her right side you'd be using your left side if you were standing face to face with her. Or you can work the same side she's working just rmember which side that is. Most of my students find mirroring for aerobics is the easiest, so that's usually how I teach, assuming that everyone is going to mirror me. But whatever you do, stick with it threw the whole workout, this will help keep you from being confused. And if you do accidently get the wrong leg remember it, and just switch to the other leg, which will still be wrong until you get out of the sequence. This will keep you from wearing out your legs/body so much as you won't be doing the same side twice. Or just make up your own plan, as to keep working each side alternativiely then doing it twice in a row.

Also with every cardio tape you buy, watch it first, this will get you use to the queing, and will help you to see what leg everyone start off on each time, as you can just sit there and watch, no pressure of trying to be in the right spot, in the right postion, this instant, as your just veiwing. Also see if there is any tricky moves, practice them and get them down way before you decide to do the workout. I always watch my cardio tapes the day before, practice then do them the next day. If I'm in a really bad time crunch, I'll do a 30 minute workout 30 minutes watching then rewind 30 minutes doing the workout and then do my own little cool down and stretch if I'm really comfortable the next day I'll do the whole video. If not I'll warm up do the second half of the workout, and follow the cool down the next day I do cardio.

Hi Neha,

You must be good with choreography! I did LowMax at least 3 times before I really picked up all the moves and I was SO frustrated, I almost gave up! Now, it is one of my favorites! Recently, I've been thrown into a gym environment and I've never taken any classes before but am sort of being forced to do it. (I'm working at a gym now.) Anyway, they have a basic step class and an advanced step. I definitely consider myself advanced but when it comes to choreo, that's a different story so I'm unsure whether to jump right into the advanced class or take the basic first. I hate wimpy stuff and feel like it's a waste of time so I'm tempted to take the advanced - I just don't want to be tripping all over everyone!!!x(

Jump in Laura! Don't be a-feared! you can do it and who cares if you mess up anyway! Confidence girl! Confidence!!!!;-)

I'm trying, Jes! But really, gyms are so intimidating, REALLY! I can imagine how overweight people feel! I'm so sympathetic! I used to be afraid to even run outdoors for fear of people yelling rude things (and that's never even happened!)

well, i was kidding! you know i don't talk like that!

Laura::) here's a hint......look at yourself in the mirror while you are in there and you will see how great you look! i bet you are the prettiest lady in there!

no no Im not so good at choreography, thts y i was so afraid to try cathe's tapes, they always scared me, but now after doing some karen voight's step videos i am picking up, and i thought lowmax would be something i could pick up since i had seen it on fit tv, i did see the tape 2 times and tried to practice some steps, but whn u actually do the workout it gets confusing sometimes, next time i will do part of the workout to practice and try to fit in with some other workouts..thanks a lot for all ya inputs:)
