Cathe-What other forms of exercise do you do besides Step?

Cathe:

This is my first post to you. I just thought I would say that I absolutely love working out with your videos more than anyone elses. I had back surgery 2.5 years ago and without your workouts I really do not think I would have recovered and progressed so quickly. Thank you! I was just wondering what other forms of exercise you do/enjoy besides Step, kickboxing, and weight training?

I really enjoy Power Yoga, running, ramping classes.

I would like to hear from everyone what they enjoy as a compliment to your Cathe tapes.

Thank you

Hi Suzanne! I'm not Cathe (she's busy filming the Hardcore series), but I'd like to welcome you to the forum!:)

In addition to my Cathe workouts, I do power yoga (60-90 min) once a week and sub shorter yoga sessions for the final stretch in my regular workouts about 3 times a week. I also do Pilates when I can fit it in. I play tennis about once a week and I just started taking a dance class.

Oh, I forgot to mention I take belly dancing classes too. We have a show in December and I am looking forward to it.

Hi Suzanne,

Welcome to the Cathe forum, it's so nice to have you here!

You sound like you have a very well-rounded routine. In addition to my video workouts, mostly with Cathe, I also do rebounding, slide, treadmill, biking & walking/running with my dog. Occasionally I'll do some yoga and/or pilates. Oh yes, also ramping. I intend to try inline skating next.

Your belly dancing show sounds like fun!

Ruth:) :) :)

Ramping?

I haven't heard of that, but I'm very curious. Just what is ramping?

Might be something I'd like to try!

Ramping is Gin Miller's (Step aerobics inventor) newest invention. Check out her website at ginmiller.com Its a half of a circle with the diameter of the circle on the floor and the circle is raised somewhat off of the floor. You dont step on the ramp like you do the step, but you push off the ramp. It targets the hamstrings and glutes. It is not nearly as aerobic as the step bench though. The way we use it in the gym classes is to have ramping with high intensity floor aerobic intervals. Think IMAX2 with a ramp instead.

Hi Suzanne! Would you mind telling me what kind of back surgery you had? I too had back surgery almost 2 years ago for a ruptured disc.

Thanks!
Susan

HI, I had a herniated disc at L5-S1. I had laminectomy surgery to remove the herniation. I had a lot of pain, numbness, and serious muscle weakness before the surgery. About two weeks before surgery I had to wrap a rope around my leg and drag my leg behind me to walk. Surgery gave me my life back and the ability to enjoy working out with Cathe.

Sounds a lot like what I had. My bottom disc ruptured and a piece of it was lying on my siatic nerve (OUCH). The DR.just went in and took the piece out. The disc above is bulging (praying it doesn't rupture).

Anyway, does it bother you to run? My Dr. said only on a soft track. I just decided to live with the fact I can't run. I'm so thankful I have worked up to doing Cathe again. I don't do jumpy impact moves on the floor, but I can do impact on the step and some plyo moves on the floor. I'd love to hear how working out affects your back. Sometimes I have to lay off the step if I over do.

RE: Cathe-What other forms of exercise do you do beside...

Suzanne, what a great idea for the ramping...I think it's fun & I know it targets different areas, but I was still a little bummed at the lack of intensity (unless I had a migraine that day;-) ). I don't know why I didn't think of this. Thanks!

Ruth:)

I had the same problem you did. My herniated disc was pressing on my sciatic nerve also, causing ALOT of pain down my leg. I was cautioned against running because of the impact from the cement, but I do run but mostly on grass. I also horseback ride and I find that this is something I cant do as much without pain. I would like to say that my back is really never pain-free after the surgery, but I am so much better than before surgery. I used to get a little sorer from some of the high-impact moves in IMAX2/IMAX1 but not anymore. My body seems to have finally adapted and I dont get any pain anymore from those moves. Believe it or not, my back feels the best with consistant heavy exercise and the worst during the first few days of my period.

Besides my Cathe workouts, I do Pilates, walking, running my NordicTrack and running after my children! Susan

I also find that I start having more pain when it's time for new shoes. I just realized last week why all of a sudden my kness and back were sore after working out. I have some Ryka's coming any day, and I told myself, no impact until they come! (I did do All Step on Mon.) It makes such a difference!

I know my back would be much worse if I didn't workout. One thing I NEVER do is put a barbell on my shoulders. I either use dumbbells or my bun & thigh rocker.

Susan

Just recently I have found that I also enjoy belly dancing (great for sore backs...it really helps me relieve some lower back pain) and horse back riding which I love but tentative since christopher reeves fall. I used to jump (high) and i love it but you never know when that next fall (there always is another fall) could be fatal.
