I absolutely love stepups, and definately NEED to do them, I use a 14" step, which is right where I need it to be. I'm curious as to what pecentage of my body weight is being lifted? Could you give me the info. on pushups as well, both knees and military style? I go away for the summer and am in very close quarters (RV) with the fam. and am very limited as to the db's I can tote along. Leaving you for two months is somewhat depressing, I need to make sure I can at least maintain what I have achieved this winter. Any other suggestions as to what I can do would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Cathe for all the energy and support and awesome vids you put together, I just wish you could come with me on vacation!!! Thanks so much for your time. Have a delightful weekend. Sandy

I would like to know this answer as well. Also, how should you determine the hight of the step for step ups? I don't have a mini step and have been using a chair which is probably about 20 inches tall. I'm 5'6". The step is just too low at 8 inches.

20 inches sounds too high to me. Your knee should be at a 90-degree angle or less (ie: not at an acute angle). I'm 5'6" (on a good day), and I find that 12" or 14" are about right. I use the lower height when I use more weight, and compensate by dipping down a bit on the bottom of the move. Maybe you could use the step as your "floor" then step up onto the chair to make the distance shorter (but only if you can do it safely, of course).

Kathryn is right about the step height. 20 inches will kill your knees!

As for how much body weight is used when doing step ups....I'm just guessing here but I would think all of it because you are lifting your body off the ground with the pressure from one leg. I could be way wrong! But it's my guess.

I'm 5'6 too and my stool is about 16-17". I don't normally hold weight when I do step ups. I practice good form and really squeeze the muscles. If I do hold a weight it's one 10-12# dumbbell. Susan

I understand Cathe went on vacation, so thanks to all who responded. I agree, my guess is you are using all of your body weight, it makes sense to me. I'm 5'5" and a 12-14 inch step is good, and adding weights, like you susanz, is not very often! I basically just use body weight and squeeze! Now that I have a concensus, I feel much better about using only my bod to press! Thanks again, hope you are all having a splendid weekend!! Sandy

I tried this last weekend...using my step as the base. Excellent idea. Thanks for the suggestion, it solved the problem.
