Cathe: question about running...

Hi Cathe!

I've been searching through the forum, but I can't find the post I'm looking for, so I'll just ask!

I know you've recommended running to at least one poster who was concerned about weight loss. Well, after the holidays, birthdays and whatnot of the last couple months, I have about 7 lbs. that need to go. And since the weather in my part of the country (Pittsburgh) has been pretty balmy the past few days, I've been hitting the trail so to speak.

Ok, here's my question: how often a week would you recommend running for someone who's goal is to lose weight? And if you don't mind my asking, how often do you run? Just curious!

Thanks!
Joyce

Hi Joyce! It all depends on how each specific individuals body responds to exericise. I would recommend running two times per week at 45 minute sessions. Some people can handle more and some people do not do well running at all(as far as developing injuries are concerned). My suggestion is to start with two spaced out running workouts, filling in the other slots with other cardio and weight workouts. Leave one to two days free for resting your body. This is actually what I do when I am not pregnant. Good Luck!

Thanks Cathe! I appreciate the quick response! Ok, I'll limit the running to twice a week - but it's *so* nice to be outdoors for a change!

Hi frostyjan! How cool that you live in Pittsburgh too! I live out in Robinson (near the airport). Where are you located?

Hi Joyce!
I live in Upper St. Clair, but I do all of my shopping, Sam's, Home Depot, Walmart, Target, etc. out in Robinson! I have added running in 2 times a week for 45-60minutes since the fall. I got a dog and he is a running fool! I use Cathe's tapes almost exclusively for cardio and when I ran this morning with a heart rate monitor on for the first time, I noticed that my heart rate was just about the same as when I do one of Cathe's longer Step tapes (ie.,Power Max, Step Works, Step Fit), but I didn't feel likeI was running particularly fast or hard. Maybe it's just the way I felt today, but I feel like the running has helped my step workouts and I know the reverse is true! Before I started using Cathe's tapes I could barely get past a 30 minute run, but after a year of Cathe's step and strength I can run for over an hour without a problem. I hope you enjoy your runs. It's great to know there are some Cathe fans nearby!! Have a great day.

Hi Janet!

So you live in Upper St. Clair! That is too cool! And I definitely hear you about running and Cathe's tapes - there was a time when running a mile was out of the question, but not anymore.

I have almost all Cathe's tapes... I've been working out with her (so to speak) for about 4 years now and I've never been stronger.

Anyway, it's great that you can run with your dog! That must be a lot of fun. I run on the Montour Trail - are you familiar with it? It's a rails-to-trails that spans at least 8 miles, maybe more. If you ever want to run with someone, let me know!

Have a great day
Joyce

running

I agree with Cathe- 2 runs a week is good for me, plus other cardio. It's great to mix it up. Plus, by the time it's nice and springy outside (I live in PA too), you can up your runs. It'll also be light outside in the evening so you can run at different, more convenient times.

I definately try to take a day off between runs, but I think it's a personal thing. I'm small boned, petite, and I can feel it if I run too much. However, my friend is big-boned and muscular and she runs everyday, no stretching (not a good thing though- she workouts way too much!) and never feels any tightness. So I'd say do what works for you, but definately cross-train and stretch!!

RE: running

You're right - crosstraining is key, but I was so glad to get outside on Monday and run that I can see myself wanting to do it all the time once it gets warmer and the days get longer. But I have to watch because my right knee tends to bother me if I run too long and too often.
