Cathe or anyone - which barbell do you recommend?

Hi,

What brand of barbell would you recommend for someone who has never used one before? Also, where can I find one? I would like to purchase one, but don't want to buy a super expensive one.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!!

RE: US Weights

The Step Company sells a 55lb barbell set at Walmart under the US Weights brand. It only cost $19.99, so you can't beat the price. The bar comes in two parts and snaps together. It's surprisingly quite sturdy. Even if one day you buy a different bar you will still be able to use the weights. Weights are very expensive to ship, so buying at Walmart really makes sense.

RE: US Weights

the troy lite from the web site that was listed in the first response. i absolutely love it!

RE: US Weights

Stacy - just for a little more input. I bought the Walmart one when Cathe suggested it a long time ago. It is the best bargain. The feature I like the best is that it has the clips that you squeeze to change the weights. I even kept my two pound plates from another set (that was totally unworkable for fast changes because you had to screw the clip on) and can use them on the Walmart bar. It was the best suggestion and was so reasonable. I think I only paid like $20-$25 dollars for the set.

RE: US Weights

Rhea, I love the value of the Wal-Mart set. I'll definitely be checking into that one. Thanks for the feedback:)

I also bought my barbell from Wal-Mart early this year when I happened to be there and saw how cheap it was. SNM is right about the brand name (US Weight), and I think I paid $19.99 + tax (can't remember the exact price, but I knew it was a steal at the time). The plates are made of sturdy plastic material and comes with the following increments: 2 - 20#, 4 - 10#, 4 - 5#. The bar comes in two parts that are pushed together. The set I got also comes with 2 small bars that can be used as dumbbells, 2 clips for the barbell, 4 clips for the dumbbells. I have wood floors so the plates not being made of metal is a big plus for me, as well as having the clips to use for PUB and PLB. For the price, it was a great set. I do use mine all the time with 34# for the squats. I hope this helps and good luck!

I bought mine at Dicks for 25.00 and it comes w/ 2 20lb. plates, 4 10lb. plates, and 2 8lb. plates. I think the bar weighrs around 4lbs. So you get a total of 100lbs. and it comes w/ the squeeze clips. (the plates are plastic)

Well, Nenita
It sure has help me. I too have been looking for a new barbell. I have a danskin barbell, but I am ready for a heavier weight than the Danskin allows.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi Saundra,

I'm glad my input helped. I just want to make a correction. I paid $39.99 + tax for my weight set (US Weight 100 lb. Traditional Weight Set), not the $19.99 I mentioned in my earlier post. As SNM mentioned the 55 lb. set is for $19.99.

Sorry about that.

I purchased mine from Sports Authority 100# set for 49.99

Gibbee!!!

Here is a set that I found online at Sears! Looks like a very nice set for the price.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_... Sets&psid=SHOPZILLA01&sid=IDx20070921x00003c

The Set contains: (1) 60 inch, 4.5 lbs hollow three piece threaded bar, (2) 5 lb vinyl plates, (2) 10 lb vinyl plates, (2) 15lb vinyl plates, (2) 20 lb vinyl plates, (2) plastic spinlock collars. Bar has knurled non-slip grips and fits all 1 inch diameter plates. Each plate has built in handles that provide a safe, secure means of picking up, carrying, loading, and unloading plates. Quickly change and secure plates with our threaded collar system.

I noticed the sale price of $29.99 is only thru TODAY and goes back up to $39.99 tomorrow. Maybe call your Sears store to see if they have one in stock.

I got mine at Dick's Sporting Goods. It was 25$ and holds up to 100lbs. it has the clips like Cathe uses. I love it. It came w/ 2-20 lb., 4-10 lb., 2-8 lb., and I bought 2.5 lbs weights at walmart. The bat itself is about 4 lbs. Good Luck Kay
