Lisa your right as with all self taners they only tan/dye the first layer of skin, so if you exfoliate really often, you rub that first layer off. But its generally good to exfoliate the elbows and knees and use a good moisterizer and then the tan prouduct a few hours later, then they don't over absorb the taning cream. But always stay light on the elbows and knees and back of the ankles, as well as any other dry spot on the body.
But I've found that light exfoliating once a week doesn't do all that much damage, you do go a bit lighter, but it's not too hard to get your tan back to where it was, just apply twice, or that's what I do for myself. It's just when you take off a whole lot of skin, that it really screws up your tan. If you do this, you'll have to play around with it, as everyone's skin absorbs the stuff differently, and you maybe able to keep your normal exfoliate schedule or you may have to drop it completely.
