Carole, trail runner!

I do my 2 speedworks a week on pavement, but my long runs are mostly trails. They finally reopened one up here due to a fire last year. WOW alot of charred trees and downed trees but during the winter it'll be good for running. I am doing a trail race 30K on Oct 29th local. Tough course ALOT of rocky uphill, but I always look forward to it...:)...Carole

Is trail running a lot harder than regular "street" running? I heard it was way more fun...kind of "over the river and through the woods..."

Sarah..if you are into speed, trails might not be for you!! Tough to run fast on most of the trails I've run. Pavement running is generally faster. But I will say I have run some beautiful trails. I also think trail running is more fun, I've seen alot of wildlife even a bear! (he was too close for comfort, but luckily running away!). You also need to invest in a trail running shoe as regular running shoes aren't great for trails....:)...carole

I'm intrigued by trail running if for nothing other than doing something different. Some of my long running routes include short portions of trails and it is a very different experience than street running. And I know there are long trails around here. BUT, you mentioned the one thing that I can't get past and to make myself just go do it. Bears! Snakes! Mountain Lions! Got any ideas on getting past those phobias (if in fact they can even be considered phobias and not valid fears).

Elaine my way of getting past the phobia is when doing distance running on trails...NEVER run alone! I have seen a few gopher snakes, and mountain lion tracks but never the animal itself. I know they are out there, but I've run trails for about 10 years and so far so good. Trail and Ultra trail runners are really a bit different, and like you said very intriguing...:)...Carole

For the first time ever, I am not jealous of you two kicking up your heels in CA while I sit here in Ohio!!! I think worse case scenario, I may run into a deer or (eeek) a garden snake!!!

Ah Sarah....no sense of adventure...http://bestsmileys.com/signs3/14.gif[/img] I have seen alot of deer myself...a few foxes, coyotes but the worst for me is all the LOOSE dogs running in my neighborhood!!! Which is sadly, why I quit running with my dogs...:(..Carole
