Cardio or Weights First?

Cathe, I was just wondering, I read that you should do weight training first, then your cardio if you want to lose weight. It says doing weights first will deplete your glycogen stores and the cardio will burn fat better. Is this true? Just curious because I always do my cardio first, it seems to get all my muscles lose for the weights. Thanks, Pam

Hi, Pam. I'm not Cathe, but what works for me is I usually separate my cardio days from my strength days. I really feel I need that focus during strength, I like to train pretty heavy, and I need all my energy for that!!! The exception is when I do circuit training, or lately, doing the CTX series--This consists of 30min of intense cardio, followed by one body part. I think the cardio is short enough here so you aren't exhausted by the weight work. I love CTX! :-jumpy

Hi Pam! I honestly feel that there is no one rule that has the answer for everyone or everything. It certainly can't hurt to try this if you want to. Keep in mind it may work for you simply because it is a change from what you are used to or perhaps indeed your particular body responds well to this order. Also, you need to consider your goals. It may turn out that doing cardio or weights in a particular order and/or back to back simply does not work with your schedule, mental focus, or physical ability to perform well. I guess you'll never know unless you try it out. Have fun!
