Cardio Kicks vs a live class

I had the opportunity to watch a "Cardio Boxing" class at the local Y, and I have a new appreciation not only for Cardio Kicks, but also for Taebo.

This class had very little punching and kicking, and looked like the instructor made up what he wanted the class to do as he went along. I'm glad I was above the class running on the indoor track and just looking at them. I'm spoiled with all the kicks and punches in both of those tapes, and know I would have been disappointed had I gone to this class. This guy had everyone do football drills, and other stuff - more like a sports cardio class which they have on other days. I wonder if that class has more kicks and punches, and is more like a kickboxing class!

I'm I being unfair? Dont' get me wrong, I really love my Y. It's a beautiful facility, and the rates are good, as well as good hours and a great weight room, AND an air conditioned indoor track. The only live class I've seen that presents a challenge is Miss Deb H's HiLo class.

Deb H, you need to be teaching at the North Canton Y!!!!!

Hi Honeybunch,
Must be something about those Ohio YMCAs. I attended a kickbox class at my Y (in Columbus). It really kind of turned me off of kickboxing. We just did a bunch of football-type drills and then practiced kicking and punching with tubing. It was really boring and not particularly aerobic. Our instructor did not warm us up, but had us start with stretching. Blechh!
Cardio Kicks changed my opinion.

I went to a couple of live kickboxing classes when I was visiting my mom in October, at her city rec center and they were excellent. All the other classes I went to while I was there were great too. I guess they are just really lucky in Brighton, Colorado to have good instructors at their rec center. I do feel that you are kind of taking your chances when you go to a live class. The quality & interest level can really vary a lot. With a Cathe tape you are guaranteed a good workout. I do like the camaradarie (hope I spelled that right)and energy of a live class though.

I checked out local classes at martial arts studios after an out-of-state girlfriend told me how much fun she was having & the results. I was very disappointed w/ the quality of the instruction. One instructor suggested I attend regular martial arts training if I cared about form. So I went shopping for videos!

I started dropping in on a Y-Box class at my local YWCA a year and a half ago, just after I started doing the Tae Bo tapes. The instructor was superb, and after learning proper form in her classes, I was no longer plagued by the hip pain I was getting from doing Tae Bo. I liked the slower tempo, and she worked a lot on squat and kicking drills that really worked the quads and hamstrings. I also learned a lot about stance and form during the punching combos, etc.

She isn't there anymore, but I still drop in about once a month. The current instructor is also excellent, also emphasizes form, strength and intensity drills, and throws in jump rope drills as well.

I enjoy the camaraderie and energy of the live class, and the different exercises they do. If they interspersed it with hi/lo like Cathe's, it would be perfect!

Cardio kicks advantage: easier to squeeze into my schedule, totally fun

Live class advantage: I get to interact with live adult humans, totally fun.
