Carb Counts for weight loss

woodie

Cathlete
Hello! I am trying to lose weight and I wantd to tailor a diet that would help me do this along with workout. How many carbs should one take in during a given day?

Thank you! :)

Lisa

I count calories, not carbs, and just try to make sure any carbs I take in are "good" carbs as opposed to junk carbs - refined, that is. Brown rice, not white rice, whole wheat tortillas, not white flour ones, etc.

Yep! Im with Cakebaker on this one

I count calories more than carbs (or fats, sugars etc)

This works better for me in a everyday eating plan and allows me MORE variety to choose from.

I'd say counting calories works more on the line of WW and their point system while counting Carbs equalls the Zone, so what ever works for you really

Everyone is going to be different on that one, depending on the amount of exercise for the day and whether you want to loose weight, maintain your weight and YES! any gain weight for some.

Its all down to the good old "calories in verses calories out" system

The quick solution until someone can give you a substancial website to look at , is to Google "Calories" and your'll get umpting choices on sites that can tell you how much calories YOU should be eating a day

Don't count vegetable as carbs, unless they are cooked carrots or Potatoes.

A rule of thumb is try and take in 100grams of carbs. See what happens? If you don't lose, reduce by 10, but don't go below 60g per day. Carbs are important for fuel, and are needed for brain funcation.

Calorie counting is not a great option (imo) if it worked, then one diet is all we'd need and not the 10,000 diet books on the market.

Thanks for the info - I read somewhere that carb conting was better than calorie counting a while ago - that's why I askled the question. A while ago it was a ll about fat gram counting but now that seems to have gone by the wayside.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah, me too. I just count overall calories. I don't really pay attention to fat (except saturated and trans) or carbs. I just try not to eat pasta for lunch. Makes me zzzzzzzzz......

I do have one piece of white bread everyday. I make it in my breadmaker and it's just soooooooo good! But my waffle and cereal are all whole grains. And I don't eat rice. The only kind I like is Jasmine rice, which is white. So I just don't bother.

For me, with a non-active job and lots of cardio exercise plus extra walking, which make me "moderately active," I allow 14 calories per pound of what I WANT to weigh. This has worked out very well, and I certainly am not starving.

Please excuse the hijack of your irigional question Lisa, while I with respect address Wayne's post.

The newly updated 2005 Dietary Guidlines from the U.S. and the HHS (Health and Human Services) state: and I quote

<< when it comes to body weight control, it is calories that count - not the portions of fat, carboyhydrates or protein in the diet >>

These are the same people who said we could add a few years onto our lives if we just restricted our daily food intake a little more than we do. They dont say we can add years onto our lives by cutting carbs or protein. We need IT ALL in our diets, just not as much as we are consumming presently.

Weight is dertimined by the number of calories consumed, reguardless of where those calories come from, and the number of calories used as energy.

Merely controlling carbs, sugars or fats, is going to mean "zero" to your weight if MORE calories are consumed than burned

So yes! eat low fat, low GI carbs and best forget the sugars all together, BUT DONT FORGET how many calories you are consuming in each given day.

And with respect to Wayne and his statement that " Calorie Counting is not a good option, because if it worked, then one diet is all we need etc etc"
doesnt explain that if the Atkins Diet worked for everyone, we wouldnt need the Zone, and if the Zone worked, we wouldnt need WW or Jenny Graig! so on and so on............

I just found that a strange point to make.

Anyway..........this post is just my personal opinion of course and what works and has worked, for me

I count calories as well to make sure I do not under eat. I am trying to build muscle/lower body fat % and stick to around 1800 cal a day. I also eat my starchy carbs through out the day until dinner time. I usually have either a yam or vegetables with dinner. I found that this is working for me and I am now starting to see results in me ab section especially. I am also paying attention to increasing protein, lowering sodium intake and eating lower fat too. I do workout in the mornings, so this is why I eat more carbs during the day as opposed to evenings. I have found that different things work for different people, so just play with your diet a bit until you see what works for you.

Hi Lisa--I'm a dedicated carb counter. If you go by Atkins, you have to have >20 grams per day for two weeks to get into ketosis phase, at which point you'll start burning off weight like crazy. In fact even during those first two weeks you'll probably lose at least 5 lbs, which is mostly water weight.

You can also do a modified low carb diet. It all depends on your carb intake now. I think if you kept it below 50 grams a day for two weeks & then modified it to >100 you still lose weight at a steady pace.

I find it very frustrating being short and finding a caloric intake that helps me to drop pounds. I understand at my height and age I should be consuming approximately 1200 calories to drop weight. But, then there's the frustrating line in the sand that says that 1200 calories may cause my body to hold onto weight because it thinks I'm in starvation mode. FRUSTRATING!!!

Oh my gosh! I just looked at what I was planning to take in for my diet - just around 100 carbs - and I feel like all I'm eating is lettuce! What do you eat to stay under 20 grams???

Lisa

Lots of veggies, Lisa. Even an apple is approx 30 carbs (as I recall). Have to stay away from the while stuff because that's where you really see the carbs (white bread, sugar, potatoes).

Cheeses, meats, lots of eggs and yes, lots of veggies. I eat a ton of salads, and for dinner I usually have meat & a veggie. It's really not as hard as it sounds once you get used to it.

I hope not. I'm a serious carb girl - give me some pasta and alfredo sauce and I'm happy! I am going to try and keep the carbs at around 100 because I am afraid to go lower (fatigue). Did anyone else find out that they were tired when going lower than 100 carbs and working out to cathe?

Woodie,

Yes. I was fatigued for a few days but then was okay. Or so I thought I was. I was eating higher protein and low glycemic carbs for almost a year. I recently added fruit and oatmeal back in and notice that my cardio endurance has skyrocketed and I am lifting heavier weights again without a problem. Looking back, I guess I wasn't fueling my workouts like I should have been.

This may not happen to everyone but it was my experience.

Same here. For longer than a few days too. It probably took my body about 2 weeks to adjust to taking in less energy. Also I lost some strength w/my lifting workout. It took me about 8 weeks to recover from that. But it was mostly a matter of keep on keepin on.

You can still have your pasta, just not as often. Plan a binge day for yourself once or twice a month. That way you have something to look forward to. And in all honesty the foods I used to eat regularly & take for granted taste SO MUCH BETTER now that they're a special treat.
