Car Seat Question

Okay, I think my son might be done with his booster seat, but I want to be totally sure before I take him out of it. He is 7, weighs around 60-65 pounds and is about 54-55 inches tall (he comes to my chin and I am 5'6). He is in first grade, but taller then most of the boys in 3rd grade. Does he still need a booster seat? Also, at the amusement park we went to last summer, he was able to ride his first roller coaster since he was tall enough to get on every ride there. I can't imagine him going on some insane roller coaster and then riding home in a booster seat :)

So when did you take your kids out of their boosters and allow them to sit in the vehicle with a seatbelt?

Thanks!!
Sara

You need to check on the laws in your state. I know in New York state boosters are required until the child reaches the age of seven.

My DD is now 8 and I think she stopped sitting in her booster around 7, but I used a seat belt adjuster so that the seatbelt sat where it should and didn't sit across her neck or anything. But like the others said, check with the laws of your state, first.

Sara-I highly suggest you take DS to your town's police station and ask them. Make sure you take the booster seat with you. They will be able to tell you. I know in PA it is also 8years or 80 pounds, but there is SOME discretion here.

For instance, my younger DS is 7 and is a tall, skinny lean guy. (lol). Because of his height, his entire head was above the top of the booster back. To me, it didn't seem safe that if I were to get in a wreck, his head could jerk...maybe seriously injurring his neck. So I went to the police chief and had him check it out. He said I could safely have DS ride in the regular seat.

It's worth the time and energy for the drive there, to ensure your DS's safety!

Gayle,

It sounds like we have the same size 7 year olds!!! Mine is tall and has about 2% body fat...what I would do to have his tiny waist ;)

I thought about the police station or the dr's office. How tall is your son?

I think Graco must have a lobbyist working hard in every state. I think that they'll finally get it passed that kids can't be out of some kind of car seat until they graduate high school!

I bet your state police or local PD can be a helpful resource. I know the NYS Troopers will even install your car seat for you and show you how to do it properly.

LOL TeTe! My SIL might be a good candidate. She's so short she sits in a pillow in her car to see above the steering wheel! Perhaps a booster seat would help!
