Cap and Trade

This is a politically charged issue. What are your thoughts?

I don't have enough information to make an educated comment. My DH thinks it will break us.
I asked a coworker what he thought and he'd never heard of it.

So I would love to see a friendly debate in Catheland to help me make an informed decision.

Carola, you are 'in the know' about this kind of thing. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this.

We are having advertisements on local radios from the energy company and gist of it is they say yes for the cap part but no for the trade part. Maybe I have that mixed up.

I'm thinking that the caps will be exceeded, then companies will be fined, then they will pass the costs onto us.

I'm also thinking many other countries are not doing this???

If I'm wrong-no flames please. I'm just trying to gather more information.

My DH says it will hurt farmers-again I don't know.

I would advise everyone to educate yourself and call your senators to let them know how you feel. This will have major impact on our lives.

My senator and representative are tired of hearing from me. :D I called last week on this issue. Before that I called on raw milk. And the stimulus. Also on the dairy bill.

I'm sure I'm on a list somewhere. :D

I believe the bill is 1200 pages long. Maybe more.

What I do know is that your home will have to be "energy efficient" before you can even think about putting it on the market. A Fed will come to your home to inspect it (hence one of the many green jobs it creates) and if your house doesn't pass you can't sell or refinance. Right now I have 40 year old windows to replace and a 20 year old heating system. That comes out to about $25000 that I would have to put in before I sell. Talk about a strangle hold.

This is just one of the points of this bill . . .

And NO - no other country is doing anything near like this and probably won't. I think they are probably laughing at us.

Oh poo - I got on my soap box. Off for now and back to purging my kitchen.

Are you sure? From what I've googled it would only apply to large scale engery emitters--not residential properties:

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/01/capandtrade101.html

http://www.epa.gov/captrade/

And it's being done in Japan, Germany, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, all countries in the EU:

From what I can tell, the most onerous part on the average American household is an average $1600 per year tax:

I *think* that the National Association of Realtors was successful in getting existing single and multi family homes released from that burden. Initially it was in there but not in the passed version.

Correct me if I'm wrong, folks.

If anything, it should create jobs. If large companies have to retrofit their infrastructure to reduce emissions & become more energy efficient, that would require capital improvements & hence people would have to be hired to do the work.

But won't the large scale energy emitters either: go out of business; move operations to another country thus putting people out of work; or raise thier prices to pass the costs onto thier customers?
Not flaming fyi I just really need to learn more about this-just a friendly educational debate. :)

Where's Carola?

I wouldn't think so. I'll look into the details more, but I believe there are tax credits & grants involved in the program.

I don't usually even read any of the political threads but as this one seemed so low in replies I thought I'd risk it! :p First off, I'm very impressed by the cordial information sharing, but my main reason for responding is to publicly shame myself and share my woeful degree of ignorance. I am so horrified to realize I was completely unaware this bill was even being discussed let alone passed. It scares me to realize how there are so many issues which will directly affect myself, my children and the rest of the country and I am uninformed. I can not reply with any ounce of an opinion but I thank you for sharing this. It was a good wake up call for me and the importance of becoming a more involved citizen.

You are not alone. Like I said above I asked a few people at work. One person who is quite knowlegable looked at me like I had grown a set of antlers.

I don't have enough information to form an intelligent decision but I'm going to read through Laura's and Parker's links and I'll show them to my DH to see what he thinks.

I'm hoping to learn a lot by this thread from the people's thoughts on it pro/con.

So post away everybody-don't be shy!!! you know you want to:p.
