Can't workout- how many calories?

Cathlete
I had wrist surgery and can't workout for a few weeks. And then I'm having toe surgery. So I probably won't be able to workout too much for almost 2 months!

I think it'd be a good time for me to work on eating better, but how can I figure out how many calories I should eat since I'm not exercising?

Is it possible to LOSE weight even if I'm not working out. FYI- my diet now is bad- lots of processed foods like fries, chips, sweets.

thanks

Hi there ...

A couple of questions and a suggestion.

Questions:

1.) Even though you cannot workout the traditional way, videos, that has become part of your lifestyle, can you bike or walk or swim? Those types of activities maybe acceptable during your wrist surgery recovery.

2.) With your toe surgery, can you do weight training exercises as soon as your able too?

It is possible to lose weight while recovery during surgeries. The muscle that you've put on will sustain you through this down time. It takes a bit of time before they deteriorate.

As far as calories, I’d go for the standard 1,500 calories per day with at least 25 grams of fiber a day.

Also, it’s great that you’re looking at it this way. As an opportunity to focus and improve your eating habits. That’s great!

If you have any questions or need any tips or tricks, let us know. I know I’ll help anyway that I can. I also know how surgery can drive a person batty during recovery. I had my gall bladder removed and was down for weeks too. It drove me NUTS!

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Keta. :D

LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-02 AT 03:36PM (Est)[p]My personal rule of thumb is reduce 300-450 calories for non-work out days (which requires you figure out what a normal day consists of for you).

Remember your body needs lots of healthy fuel to recover from surgery. If you can stick to fruits, veggies, meats, fish, and even rice/pasta/potato and avoid those snacky fatty sugary foods during this time, I am sure you will be fine! Mention your concerns to your surgeon's nurse.

:) Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
